Chemical Engineers and Their Job

Chemical engineers design processes to transform, manufacture, and transport different

materials. They can produce chemicals, food, fuels, pharmaceuticals (drugs) and more. As
a chemical engineer you could be estimating a cost for a project, conducting research to
improve manufacturing processes, and/or oversee production.

Path to Becoming a Professional

● In high school it is important to gain a solid understanding of mathematics, chemistry,

biology, physics, engineering, and their connection so that this knowledge can be
built on in future years of higher training.
● In college, a bachelor's degree has to be obtained and the more degrees you get, the
more qualified you become and have more chance of getting a job.
○ A masters is recommended and sometimes chemical engineers have a PhD.
● Get licensed!
College and Association
The college curriculum is very expansive. At the Stanford Chemical Engineering
Department, their curriculum includes mathematics, material and energy balances,
thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, energy and mass transfer, separation technologies,
chemical reaction kinetics and reactor design, and process design.

The traits of a good chemical engineer can be defined as The Four Ps:
● Persistence
● Problem Solving
● Patience
● Passion

Most of these traits come with experience!

Outlook
The demand for chemical engineers is expected to grow, but continuing at a slower
rate. The projected 10 year growth rate is 2%.

There are many opportunities out there in the chemical engineering field though:
● There is opportunity in biotechnology for the help of chemical engineers.
● In the general engineering field, there is a lot of opportunity for women and
people of color.
