PLANTING AND PROPAGATING TREES

PROPER WAYS OF PLANTING TREES AND FRUIT

BEARING PLANTS
TWO WAYS OF PLANTING TREES

• DIRECT SEEDING- is a method of planting where the

seeds or parts of a plant are directly planted in the soil

• INDIRECT SEEDING- the plants needs to be transferred

to its permanent place commonly done with trees.
METHODS OF PROPAGATING TREES

• SEXUAL METHODS - uses seend in planting.

• ASEXUAL METHODS - uses any of these methods

cutting, grafting, marcotting, inarching, budding, layering,
and the uses of specialized plants like runners, suckers,
tubers, roots stock, crown, bulb and leaves.
ASEXUAL METHODS OF PROPAGATING TREES
AND FRUITS

• Cutting - the leaves are

removed and the stem are
cut 10 inches long. One-
half of th cutting is inserted
into the soil.
Grafting - This is an
artificial vegetative process
of propagating trees. The
stem of one plant (mother
plant) og a good variety is
inserted or connected into
another plant. Making the
two units form another plant.
Grafting is used in trees like
mango, guava, pomelo,
rambutan, and santol
• Layering - the branch
should be hard and
undamaged. the uncut
branch is laid on the
ground and covered with
soil. When roots apper,
this branch is cut and
planted in another place.
Marcotting- Also called air
layering, this methodinduces
rooting in tree branch. The
branch is peeled off or
scraped before putting soil.
Then it is covered with
plastic and watered
everyday. When the roots
appear, the branch is cut off
and planted in the soil to
develop into a new
independent plant.
Some ways of Propagating Trees
• by underground runners like sugarcane and pineapple.

• by suckers which as shoots springing from the sides of

the main plant like banana.

• by bulb which are modified leaves folded around each

other as in oinion and garlic.
• by creeping stems or rhizomes as in ginger.

• by runners above the ground which are small branches

that come out from the hose of the stem the runs along
the ground and its end produces a plant like taro.

• by tubers or a thickened stem as in sweet potatoor yam

SOURCES OF FRUIT - BEARING TREES

• There are several sources of fruit - bearing trees. They

are sold in different stages of growth and ready to be
transplanted.
Commercial Nursery- ran by private individuals usually
offering landscaping materials and services

Agricultural Institution- a school that offers a course

related to agriculture and other studies.
Department of Agriculture - responsible for any
agricultural activities in terms of vegetables and fruits.

Bureau of Plant Industry - they deelop scientific

improvement for each plant specie present in a locality and
adjacent place.
WAYS TAKING CARE OF SEEDLINGS

• Water the seedlings every morning and afternoon to keep

the soil moist.
• Add enough fertilizer to make the plants healthy and
strong.
• Check for possible infestation and apply immediate
remedy.
• Pull out weeds around the plants.
• Protect the plants against insects by spraying
insecticides.
• Arrange the seedlings in an organized position/ manner
• Keep away from stray animals.
