Through the investigation of the third

dimension, we can wonder how shape and
form can inform one another.

Shape is two dimensional and form is three

dimensional, however one can create the
other. Six squares in proper placement can
create a cube. Three triangles in proper
placement can create a pyramid.

If we look for and create geometric shapes

then repeat them and shrink or magnify
them, then we could build from the shapes
a form.

3
Materials:
Matchsticks, box cutters, craft knife/clippers,
sketchbook, adhesive (tape and hot glue gun/glue
sticks), thin paper/tissue paper, ruler

Objective:
Explore the use of line and plane as a sculptural
element. Use repeated two dimensional shapes to
construct a three dimensional form. Use plane to
accentuate linear form.

4
Directions and
Expectations.
During class you will be presented with a Lexicon Jam. A
lexicon can be described as the language of a subject. In this
experience the language is wood and the subjects are shape,
repetition, and narrative. The lexicon jam serves to allow you
the opportunity to see what has been done in wood sculpture
with the shape and repetition being the emphasis.

Following the lexicon jams, you are to do the following:

Process:

Create, drawings in your sketchbook, a variety of two

dimensional shapes. Draw intuitively and freely. Focus on
creating shapes that are unrecognizable, straight edged, yet
resonate with you in some way.

You will be selecting a shape and reproducing as three

dimensional using wooden sticks and adhesive. Begin by
creating simple forms by connecting two shapes together.

Create a series of a cube, a pyramid and a rhomboid as a way

to explore the process of measuring, cutting, and joining
material. Take process photos of your exploration, print the
images and adhere them to your sketchbook. Articulate what
you have learned through trial, error, and effort.

Finally, you will be creating a large, in the round piece using

repeated shapes. You will use thin white tissue paper to create
a surface around certain parts of this form. Think about how
you can draw attention to different parts of the work by
creating a collision between open and closed form. As you
learn about the elements and principles of design, think about
how you can incorporate them into your work.
