WHAT IS NGO?

NGO (NON-GOVERNMENTAL
ORGANIZATION) IS DEFINED BY
WORLD BANK AS ‘PRIVATE
ORGANIZATIONS THAT PURSUE
ACTIVITIES TO RELIEVE SUFFERING,
PROMOTE THE INTERESTS OF THE
POOR, PROTECT THE
ENVIRONMENT, PROVIDE BASIC
SOCIAL SERVICES OR UNDERTAKE
COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT.
31 Lakh NGOs, more than double the number of schools.

Total no. of schools in the country is around 15 lakhs, as per


data compiled by the Planning Commission of India, 2011.

NGO IN 250 times the number of government hospitals, one NGO


for 400 people as against one policeman for 709 people.

INDIA In 7 UTs, more than 82000 NGOs are registered.

UP tops the list with more than 5.48 lakh NGOs followed
by Maharashtra with 5.18 lakh. Kerala comes third with

3.7 lakh followed by West Bengal with 2.34 lakh.


Less than 10% of NGOs have complied with the
requirements of submitting balance sheets &
income expenditure statements with the Registrar
of societies.

Of around 30 lakh NGOs, only 2.9 lakh have


submitted financial statements.

In Kerala, none of the 3.9 lakh NGOs have filed


since the state law doesn’t mandate it.
The Society For Participatory Research In Asia
(PRIA) survey 2015 reveals that:

26.5% of NGOs are engaged in religious


activities.

21.3% work in the area of community and/or


social service.

About one in five NGOs works in education.

7.9% are active in the fields of sports and


culture.

6.6% work in the health sector.

HELPAGE INDIA IS A LEADING CHARITY IN INDIA WORKING WITH
AND FOR DISADVANTAGED ELDERLY FOR NEARLY 4 DECADES.

IT WAS SET UP IN 1978 AND IS REGISTERED UNDER THE SOCIETIES’


REGISTRATION ACT OF 1860.

THERE ARE AN ESTIMATED 106 MILLION ELDERLY IN INDIA.

HELPAGE ADVOCATES FOR THEIR NEEDS SUCH AS FOR UNIVERSAL


PENSION, QUALITY HEALTHCARE, ACTION AGAINST ELDER ABUSE
AND MANY MORE AT A NATIONAL, STATE AND SOCIETAL LEVEL
WITH CENTRAL AND STATE GOVERNMENTS.

IT ADVOCATES FOR ELDER FRIENDLY POLICIES AND THEIR


IMPLEMENTATION THEREOF.

IT WORKS HAND-IN-HAND WITH SENIOR CITIZENS ASSOCIATIONS


UNDERSTANDING ELDER NEEDS WORKING WITH AND FOR THEM.

THE AIM IS TO SERVE ELDER NEEDS IN A HOLISTIC MANNER,


ENABLING THEM TO LIVE ACTIVE, DIGNIFIED AND HEALTHIER LIVES.
HelpAge India runs various programs servicing the needs of
disadvantaged elderly mentioned here below:

Mobile Healthcare Units (MHU):There are more than 159 Mobile


Healthcare Units working in 24 states, providing 2.9 million free
treatments.

PROJECTS Restoration of Vision: This program has benefitted more than 9


OF lakh elders, restoring their sight & dignity.

HELPAGE Cancer and Palliative Care: Over 99,000 treatments have been
INDIA supported since 1998.

Geriatric Physiotherapy: Under this program, elders with


musculoskeletal diseases such as back pain, arthritis, paralysis and
other age-related mobility challenges are treated.

Support a Gran: Over the years HelpAge India has enabled more
than 30,000 destitute elders, by providing them regular supplies of
food rations, clothing, basic healthcare and some pocket money, so
they can live a life of dignity.
Elder Helplines: 1800-180-1253: HelpAge runs toll-free Elder Helplines across 21
states in India offering assistance to older persons in need of emergency care and
protection. HelpAge has also launched the 'HelpAge SOS' App to ensure help is
just a click away.

Old Age Homes/Day Care Centers: HelpAge India has established model homes
for the aged in places such as Patiala & Gurdaspur in Punjab, Cuddalore in Tamil
Nadu and Kolkata in West Bengal. Besides these, HelpAge has also supported over
60 old age homes across India.

Livelihood Support: Elders struggling to survive, especially in rural India, live


lonely and impoverished lives. HelpAge organizes them into sustainable Elder-Self-
Help-Groups (ESHGs) so they can pool their resources and support each other in
times of need.

Student Action for Value Education (SAVE) - To address the increasing gap
between generations and sensitize the young towards elders, HelpAge works hand-
in-hand with schools across the country to inculcate values of care, love and respect
towards the elderly, in young students so they grow to become responsible and
caring individuals and are sensitive to the needs of the older generation.

Digital Literacy for Elders: The increasing pace of change in technology often
excludes elders from the mainstream social fabric. To tackle this, HelpAge has
started an easy 'Digital Literacy' program introducing elders to the online world.
For elders, using the HelpAge Handbook for senior citizens – Computers and Smart
Phones learning made easy.

AdvantAge Card program: Currently, there are 1.75 lakh members across 400
towns, in 23 states, being offered discounts by more than 8000 retail outlets across
India

COMMUNITY LOCATIONS, SPREAD OVER 24 STATES AND
ORGANIZED 1983 HEALTH CAMPS WHICH PROVIDED 27.69 LAKH

BENEFICIARIES ASIA'S LARGEST MOBILE HEALTHCARE NETWORK
