Description

▪ Mapping or transformation is the geometrical interpretation of a complex

variable function over the R2 plane.
▪ It shows how the nature of a function can be shown graphically.
▪ Real valued functions can be easily mapped upon a 2-D x,y plan since they
depend upon only two variables.
▪ However complex valued functions depend upon four variables (x,y,u and v)
▪ Thus they require transformation from one plane to another to be
displayed upon a 2-D paper.
▪ There are two types of transformations used in complex functions:

1. Conformal or Linear transformation:

In this type of transformation, the angle between the u and v curves on xy-
plane is preserved and is the same on the uv-plane.

2. Mobius or bilinear transformation:

This type of transformation follows
Example

▪ How transformation effects the graph of a function?

▪ Lets consider a function z mapped as square in xy-plane. Now the function
w = Az+ B will be mapped using transformation, where A and B are
complex constants. The constant ‘A’ can increase the radius of the variable and
can also rotate the variable. While the constant ‘B’ will only shift the positon of
the contour.

Mapping of function w = 𝑧 2
Each Complex function can be expressed as:

f(z) = u(x,y) + iv(x,y)

Where z= x + iy

Now for 𝑧 2 , the function is written as:

f(𝑧 2 ) = 𝑥 2 − 𝑦 2 + 𝑖2𝑥𝑦

Thus 𝑢 = 𝑥 2 − 𝑦 2 ---------------------(1)
& v = 2𝑥𝑦 ---------------------(2)
Now let u=a where a is any constant ,and let v=b where b is any
constant. Thus equation 1 and 2 become:

𝑥2 − 𝑦2 = 𝑎 & 2𝑥𝑦 = 𝑏

Thus both form orthogonal parabolas in the z-plane. Hence the graphs can be
mapped as shown.
