Chemical Engineering Profession

 Chemical Engineers take chemistry out of the lab

and into the world around us.

 They apply scientific knowledge and technical

expertise to produce useful materials at a
reasonable cost and in the safest manner possible.

MEB - Introduction
• Material and Energy balances are the
foundation of chemical engineering
• Known as the ‘accountancy’ of chemical
engineering
• MEB tells how much material and energy
have gone in, how much have been used and
how much have been wasted.
• Applies laws of conservation of mass and
energy

9/19/2019
Why MEB?
• To find out how much material and
energy are going in and how much are
going out
• (WHY? Remember task of a chemical
engineer…. )
• To improve the efficiency of the process
• To increase profit by minimising use of
raw materials and energy
• To increase profit by maximising useful
products
• Waste minimisation
9/19/2019
Conclusions
• Understood
– Chemical Engineering
– Profession
– Chemical Industries – Global and Local
– Importance of MEB in ChE
