QUADRATIC EQUATIONS

SOLVING QUADRATIC EQUATIONS USING A FORMULA

Student should be able to determine the roots of a quadratic equation by using a formula
MATERIAL

A. Definition Quadratic Equation

A quadratic equation is an equation of the second degree.
The standard form is 𝑎𝑥² + 𝑏𝑥 + 𝑐 = 0 with 𝑎 ≠ 0 and 𝑎, 𝑏, 𝑐 ∈ 𝑅.
Example:
 𝑥 2 + 4𝑥 + 5 = 0
 2𝑥 2 + 2𝑥 = 0
MATERIAL

B. Methods of Solving Quadratic Equations

The roots or solutions of 𝑎𝑥² + 𝑏𝑥 + 𝑐 = 0 are the 𝑥 values that satisfy the
equation.
There are three main methods for solving quadratic equations:
 Factorization
 Completing the square method
 Quadratic Equation Formula
MATERIAL

C. Solving quadratic equations using a formula

 There are equations that can’t be reduced using the above two methods. A
Quadratic Equation Formula that will work for every quadratic equation.
 If 𝑎𝑥2 + 𝑏𝑥 + 𝑐 = 0 is a quadratic equation, then the value of x is given by the
following formula:
−𝑏 ± 𝑏 2 − 4𝑎𝑐
𝑥=
2𝑎
EXAMPLE

Solve the equation 𝟒𝒙𝟐 + 𝟓𝒙 + 𝟏 = 𝟎

Solution:
Given that 𝒂 = 𝟒, 𝒃 = 𝟓 𝒅𝒂𝒏 𝒄 = 𝟏 Then,
−𝟓 + 𝟒𝟗 𝟐
These values are substituted into the 𝒙𝟏 = =
𝟖 𝟖
formula
−𝒃 ± 𝒃𝟐 − 𝟒𝒂𝒄
𝒙𝟏,𝟐 = −𝟓 − 𝟒𝟗 𝟏𝟐
𝟐𝒂 𝒙𝟐 = =−
𝟖 𝟖
−𝟓 ± 𝟓𝟐 − 𝟒. 𝟒. 𝟏 𝟐 𝟏𝟐
𝒙𝟏,𝟐 = Therefore the value of 𝒙𝟏 = 𝟖 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝒙𝟐 = −
𝟐. 𝟒 𝟖

−𝟓 ± 𝟒𝟗
𝒙𝟏,𝟐 =
𝟖
