INTRODUCTION TO FASHION
AND GLOBAL TEXTILE
ASSIGNMENT NO:1

• WHAT IS FASHION ?
Fashion is a popular aesthetic expression in a
certain time and context, especially in clothing, footwear, lifestyle,
accessories, makeup, hairstyle and body proportions.[1] Whereas, a
trend often connotes a very specific aesthetic expression, and often
lasting shorter than a season, fashion is a distinctive and industry-
supported expression traditionally tied to the fashion season and
collections.[2] Style is an expression that lasts over many seasons, and
is often connected to cultural movements and social markers, symbols,
class and culture (ex. Baroque, Rococo, etc). According to sociologist
Pierre Bourdieu, fashion connotes “the latest fashion, the latest
difference.

NOTE OF CHARLES FREDERICK WORTH –

Charles
Frederick Worth was an English fashion designer
who founded the House of Worth, one of the
foremost fashion houses of the 19th and early 20th
centuries. He is considered by many fashion
historians to be the father of haute couture.
Worth is also credited with revolutionizing the
business of fashion.
ASSIGNMENT
NO:3

• TYPES OF FASHION :
1. HAUTE COUTURE
2. PRET-E-PORTER
3. MASS MARKET
HAUTE COUTURE

• Haute couture French for "high sewing" or "high dressmaking"

or "high fashion") is the creation of exclusive custom-fitted
clothing. Haute couture is high-end fashion that is
constructed by hand from start to finish, made from high-
quality, expensive, often unusual fabric and sewn with
extreme attention to detail and finished by the most
experienced and capable sewers—often using time-consuming,
hand-executed techniques. Couture translates literally from
French as "dressmaking" but may also refer to fashion,
sewing, or needlework and is also used as a common
abbreviation of haute couture and refers to the same thing in
spirit. Haute translates literally to "high". A haute couture
garment is always made for an individual client, tailored
specifically for the wearer's measurements and body stance.
PRET-E-PORTER

• Ready-to-wear or PRET-E-PORTER is the term for

factory-made clothing, sold in finished condition in
standardized sizes, as distinct from made to measure
or bespoke clothing tailored to a particular person's
frame. Off-the-peg is sometimes used for items other
than clothing such as handbags.

• Ready-to-wear has a rather different place in the

spheres of fashion and classic clothing. In the fashion
industry, designers produce ready-to-wear clothing,
intended to be worn without significant alteration
because clothing made to standard sizes fits most
people. They use standard patterns, factory equipment,
and faster construction techniques to keep costs low,
compared to a custom-sewn version of the same item.
MASS MARKET

• The term "mass market" refers to a

market for goods produced on a large
scale for a significant number of end
consumers. The mass market differs
from the niche market in that the
former focuses on consumers with a
wide variety of backgrounds with no
identifiable preferences and
expectations in a large market segment.
Traditionally, businesses reach out to
the mass market with advertising
messages through a variety of media
including radio, TV, newspapers and the
Web.
