DEVELOPMENT OF
STRUCTURAL CONCRETE
TECHNOLOGY
Industrialised Building System (IBS)
• Prefabrication technology in Malaysia is called
IBS, alternatively known as modern methods of
construction (MMC) or off-site manufacturing
(OSM).
Industrialised Building System (IBS)
• IBS has been promoted since the 1960s but the
construction industry in Malaysia has stuck to
conventional methods. This had a negative impact
and delay in the implementation of projects.

LATE 1980’s: HIGH PERFORMANCE CONCRETE
• Self-Placing Concrete
• Ultra-High Performance Fibre-Reinforced Concrete
1989: PRECAST CONCRETE
• Eastern Pretech Sdn Bhd introduced precast
concrete products and prefabricated bathroom
units.
2011: ULTRA-HIGH PERFORMANCE DUCTILE
CONCRETE
• 50m single span UPHDC road bridge
crossing Sungai Linggi, Negeri Sembilan
2011: EXTERNALLY PRESTRESSED SEGEMENTED
(EPS) CONCRETE
Tendons are placed completely
outside the concrete section and
attached to the concrete
anchorages.
ADAVANTAGES:
• Substantial economical savings due to the
possibility of weather-independent
segment production and a shorter
construction period
• Simple element assembly at job site
• Replaceability of tendons
• Corrosion protection of the prestressing
tendons and improved fatigue behaviour
