Industrialised Building System (IBS)
• Prefabrication technology in Malaysia is called
IBS, alternatively known as modern methods of
construction (MMC) or off-site manufacturing
(OSM).
Industrialised Building System (IBS)
• IBS has been promoted since the 1960s but the
construction industry in Malaysia has stuck to
conventional methods. This had a negative impact
and delay in the implementation of projects.

• The appropriate IBS technology for the construction


industry in Malaysia is hybridization – a
combination of a small partial conventional method
with mechanization technology.
CoolCure Technology
• It can reduce and eliminate the heat of hydration.

• This is done by balancing the chemistry of the material. The


heat is reduced by minimizing the calcium hydrozide
byproduct generation. The calcium hydrozide is better used,
creating more reinforcing bonds instead of creating heat.

• This creates more efficient reaction, but it also increases


compression strength as well.

• Additionally, CoolCure offers ‘cure-on-demand’ technology


variations that can speed or slower the cure speed to meet
end-user specific applications.
Smart Concrete Technology
• It was developed by Dr. Deborah D.L. Chung from
State University of New York.

• It is fortified with carbon fiber, which comprises as


much as 0.2 percent to 0.5 percent of the volume.
This can help detect stress or strain in concrete
structures.

• This technique is capable of sensing miniscule


structural flaws before they become substantial,
and it is relatively cheaper than installing sensors
inside the concrete.
HISTORY OF PRESTRESSED
CONCRETE
The concept of prestressed concrete appeared
in 1888 when P.H. Jackson was granted the first
patent in the United States for prestressed
concrete design. Jackson’s idea was perfect, but
the technology of high strength steel that
exhibited low relaxation characteristics was not
yet available. It was not until Eugene Freyssinet
defined the need for these materials that
prestressed concrete could be used as a EUGENE
structural building material. FREYSSINET
Unfortunately, although Freyssinet, a brilliant structural
designer and bridge builder, lacked the teaching qualities
necessary to communicate his ideas to other engineers. It
would take Gustave Magnel to write the first book about the
design in prestressed concrete, communicating this idea to
designers worldwide. Magnel designed and built the
legendary Walnut Lane Bridge in Philadelphia, which
revolutionized prestressed concrete in America.

• Corrosion protection of the prestressing
tendons and improved fatigue behaviour

• Value: RM 569 Million

Construction engineering and temporary works design,


including: temporary work for segments erection, pre-
camber for typical and special crossing, checking on
permanent works design during the segment erection using
overhead gantry and temporary prestressed design for
erection. The project was completed in December 2014.

Malaysia – Tanjong Puteri Bridge

• Contractor: Gerbang Perdana Sdn Bhd
• Client: SMHB Sdn Bhd
• Value: RM 15 Million

Tanjung Puteri Bridge consists of 2 ramps of viaduct, inbound and


outbound. Total length for each bridge is approximately 160m and
width varies from 14.5m to 19.5m. The superstructure is using
modified U-beam and precast segmental cross head for
substructure. Superstructure, substructure design and shop
drawings for pre-cast cross head. Temporary prestressed and
construction state design. The project was completed in 2007.

Detail design of 4 ramps precast segmental box girder


viaducts and 1 cast in-situ bifurcation for New CIQ
complex in Johor Bahru. The precast segmental deck has
total length of 2 km and spans up to 44m utilizing both
internal and external prestressing tendons. All the deck is
built monolithic with the single pier and portals. The
project was completed in December 2010.
Sungai Perak Bridge
Sungai Perak Bridge
Sungai Perak Bridge, is a 160 m span prestressed
concrete bridge over the Perak River in West Malaysia.
The bridge is founded on large diameter steel piles,
driven to a depth of 90 m, and its superstructure was
built by the balanced cantilever method, using in-situ
concrete units. Prestressed concrete viaducts were also
constructed, using precast beams and an in-situ
concrete deck.
