Challenges/Lessons Learnt
 Little time allocated for design and site
investigation was limited -» Allocating adequate
time to study and design is key for success
 Loose site confirmation by local authorities leads
to frequent site changes hampering progress
 Right of way problems and compensations have
slowed the progress
 Unsuitable hilly areas for water supply structures
and sanitation facilities lead to excessive cost for
flood protection and pollution
 Excessive abnormal rainy season - lengthy rainy
season (El Nino effect) hamper progress
 Capacity Limitation on the part of some contractors
25
Produced by IRC as a contribution to the One WaSH National Program
Produced by SALOMON with Partners
Best Practices
 Consideration of Satellite Villages along with Towns
 Consideration of Institutional WaSH facilities along the Town
water supply system
 The introduction of Water kiosks
 Introducing child, gender and differently abled features in
sanitation facilities
 Consideration of solid waste and sludge management
practices (solid waste collection & safe disposal, desludging
and safe disposal) in addition to traditional water supply and
sanitation
 BCBT for sustainability of WaSH services
 Preparation of Sanitation Master plan prior to recommending
minimum package sanitation facilities that will be scaled up in
the course of the master plan period
