ICT

PROFESSOR AAMIR KHAN

ICT
 ICT refers to technologies that provide access
to information through telecommunications. It is
similar to Information Technology (IT), but
focuses primarily on communication
technologies. This includes the Internet,
wireless networks, cell phones, and other
communication mediums.
What is ICT and examples
 ICT covers any product that will store,
retrieve, manipulate, transmit or
receive information electronically in a
digital form. For example, personal
computers, digital television, email,
robots. So ICT is concerned with the
storage, retrieval, manipulation,
transmission or receipt of digital
data.
What is the meaning of ICT in
education?
 ICTsstand for information and
communication technologies and
are defined, for the purpose of this
primer, as a “diverse set of
technological tools and resources used
to communicate, and to create,
disseminate, store, and manage
information.”
ADVANTAGES OF ICT
 1.Communication - Speed / time – money can be saved
because it’s much quicker to move information around. With
the help of ICT it has become quicker and more efficient.

 2. Globalization - Video conferencing saves money on flights

and accommodation. ICT has not only brought the countries
and people closer together, but it has allowed the world's
economy to become a single interdependent system to
contact either a business or family member.

 3. Cost effectiveness - It feels free to send an email (although

it isn’t); it’s without doubt cheaper than phone calls. ICT has
also helped to automate business practices, thus
restructuring businesses to make them exceptionally cost
effective.
.  4.Greater Availability - ICT has made it possible
for businesses to be automated giving clients
access to a website or voicemail 24 hours a day, 7
days a week

5.Bridging the cultural gap – Greater access to

technology has helped to bridge the cultural gap
by helping people from different cultures to
communicate with one another, and allow for the
exchange of views and ideas, thus increasing
awareness and reducing prejudice.

6.Creation of new jobs - Probably, the best

advantage of ICT has been the creation of new
and interesting jobs.
.
 7.Complex structure - through ICT, teachers can easily
explain complex structure ,instruction and ensure students
comprehension.

 08.Through ICT , teachers are able to create interactive

classrooms and make the lesson more enjoyable..
DISADVANTAGES
 1.Education – Computer’s along with their programs and the Internet have
created educational opportunities not available to previous generations.

 2.Lack of job security – Experts in a wide variety of fields believe that ICT
has made job security a big issue, since technology keeps on changing
nearly every day. This means that individuals need to be constantly studying
or at least keeping up with changes in their profession, if they want to feel
secure in their jobs to be secure.
 3.Overriding Cultures - While ICT may have made the world a global village, it
has also contributed to one culture consuming another weaker one. For
example, it is now argued that teenagers in the US influence how most
young teenagers all over the world now act, dress, and behave

.4.Privacy - Though information technology may have made
communication quicker, easier, and more convenient, it has also
brought along privacy issues. From cell phone signal interceptions to e-
mail hacking, people are now worried about their once private
information becoming public knowledge.

 5. Reliance on Technology – Professor Ian Robertson, a

neuropsychology expert based at Trinity College Dublin who carried out
the study, said: “People have more to remember these days, and they
are relying on technology for their memory but the less you use of your
memory, the poorer it becomes. . people don’t bother learning to spell
because they use spell-checker, or need a calculator do perform minor
addition or subtraction.
.  6. Reliability of Information – Anyone with
access to a computer and an internet
connection internet can start a blog or
post something up on a website, so just
because something’s on the web doesn't
mean it’s reliable. A prime example of this
is the open source encyclopedia,
Wikipedia, although considered a good
source of information it is not recognized
by academic institutions as a trustworthy
reference.
.  7.Computer viruses, worms, Trojans, malware, spam, phishing- any or all
can cause chaos and disrupt our daily lives

 8.Setting - setting up the device can be very trouble some.

 9.Expansive - too expansive to afford.

 10.Lack of experience - hard for teachers to use with a lack of

experience using ICT tools.
ICT IN VARIOUS COUNTRIES
 South Korea, Denmark, and Japan benefit from the new
significance of mobile broadband and the mass connection of
people with internet services in order to become leaders in
the Information and Communication Technology (ICT)
Development Index.
 The International Telecommunication Union based in Geneva,
Switzerland recently released the annual global Information
and Communication Technology (ICT) data and the annual
Index country rankings in ICT development.
ICT
 The former includes the ICT Development Index (IDI), which
collects data about mobile subscriptions, international
internet bandwidth, computer ownership, internet usage,
internet subscriptions and literacy in many countries
around the world. All data gathered by the IDI is used by
operators, researchers, development agencies and
governments to determine the state of global ICT
development.
.
 The Index country ranking has the top 20
countries with their levels of ICT access, use
and skills. It means that these countries have
the best access, use and skills in information
and communication technology today. In 2015,
South Korea made the top of the list. Denmark
followed in second place and Iceland came
third in the list. Most of the countries in the top
20 are in the high-income bracket.
South Korea

 South Korea has achieved high marks in the ICT race

for the past few years. Although it is only the fourth
largest economy in Asia, its telecommunications
infrastructure rivals that of many European countries.
One deciding factor is its cellular and fixed internet
broadband rates plus an 84% internet subscription.
Another reason is its population's education and
literacy figures, which is among Asia's highest.
.
 India has been ranked 131 out of 167
countries by the ICT Development
Index of the International
Telecommunication Union, which
measures countries according to their
level of ICT(information, communication
and technology) access, use and skills.
.
.
The Importance of Economy
 The IDI has set a global average value of 5.03 in
determining the annual Index country rankings. In
terms of ICT development, Asian countries that made
it to the top 20 ICT list included South Korea, Hong
Kong, Japan and Singapore. European countries have
exceeded the global average, placing them on the top
half of the rankings. Denmark leads with 8.88, while
Iceland boasts 8.86 points. This trend is true among
the Nordic countries.
.
 The United Kingdom is also a top contender for
ICT development, having shown the most
improvement from 2010 to 2015. In the Middle
East, the oil-rich states have achieved
significant IDI values. The connection between
income and ICT development is one factor that
figured in improvement and a reason why
African countries have lower IDI numbers.
