Multilin UR &10 Key Feature Descriptions

Key Feature What it Means…

IEC 62439-3 is a standard that re-defines traditional Ethernet LAN redundancy by introducing
two redundancy methods: the Parallel Redundancy Protocol (PRP) and the High-Availability
Seamless Redundancy (HSR). UR and URplus devices support both PRP. When PRP is
implemented, both main and redundant Ethernet LANs become active, data packets from
IEC62439-3 (PRP)
UR/URPlus devices are tagged and transmitted over both LANs simultaneously. The device
receiving that data, will use the packet that comes in first and drop the second one. As a benefit,
if one LAN fails, there is no failover time causing delays. UR and URPlus implementation is based
on the latest version of the IEC62439-3 standard, which is dated Jul-2012.
The “In-zone transformer protection” functionality refers to the capability that GE’s Line
Differential Protection Systems, L30 and L90, have to accommodate a power transformer
“In-zone Transformer” for between the line terminals so the current differential scheme looks over both, Line and power
line differential protection transformer, without compromising protection performance. Magnitude and phase
compensation as well as second harmonic inhibit during transformer magnetizing inrush are
provided. This reduces the current differential scheme hardware requirements.
This is a new GE’s Trade Mark that refers to all cyber security products an functionality
developed by GE Grid Automation. The “CyberSentry TM UR” is related to the set of features
inside UR devices. The UR v700 release introduced the first level of cyber security functionality,
called “CyberSentry UR Level 1”. This software option brings Radius (for remote authentication
CyberSentryTM
and access management) and Syslog (standard data format for cyber security event reporting),
which are standard tools used by IT teams for Cyber Security applications. At the date of the
v7.00 release (Dec-2012) UR relays were the only one commercially-available P&C device with
this capabilities.
Market Drivers
Market Drivers
• IEC 62439-3 Standard on Industrial Network Redundancy
Industrial communication networks – High availability automation networks – Part
3: Parallel Redundancy Protocol (PRP) and High-availability Seamless
Redundancy (HSR)
First edition of the standard “1.0” is dated Feb-2010. A second edition “2.0” came up in
Jul-2012. The Ed. 2 PRP is not backward compatible with Ed. 1 PRP. This was the trade-
off to enable multi protocol nodes, which are nodes that can be work on both PRP and
HSR networks.
The standard has been highly promoted by ABB and Siemens as they hold patents on it.
PRP has been adopted by a small number of companies so far. However, we see how
the rapidly-growing interest on this protocol can make an important market driver in the
short term.

• North American Electric Reliability Corporation Critical

Infrastructure Protection (NERC CIP)
This term has become standard matter for all utility companies in North America as they
collaborate with the US Department of Energy (DOE) and the US Department of
Homeland Security (DHS).
“The DOE designated NERC as the electricity sector coordinator for critical infrastructure
protection. NERC serves as the Information Sharing and Analysis Center for the
electricity sector. NERC also works closely with the DHS and Public Safety Canada to
ensure the critical infrastructure protection functions are coordinated with the
governments of the United States and Canada”
