RADIAL ENGINES
BY MANPREET SINGH
RADIAL ENGINE

 The radial engine is a reciprocating type internal combustion engine

configuration in which the cylinders radiate outward from a central
crankcase.
INSIDE A RADIAL ENGINE

 A radial engine works like any other four-stroke internal combustion engine.
 Each cylinder has an intake, compression, power and exhaust stroke.
 They differ in their firing order and the way they connect to the crankshaft.
 The first cylinder's connecting rod attaches directly to the crankshaft - this is
the master rod.
 The other cylinders' rods connect to pivoting points around the master rod –
these are called the articulating rods.
HOW DOES A RADIAL ENGINE WORK ?
WHY ODD NUMBER OF CYLINDERS ?

 For smoother operation of the engine, consistent power should be

produced. For doing so, odd number of cylinders are used so that every
other piston firing order can be achieved.
ADVANTAGES

 More Power
 Air Cooling
 Simpler Design
 Reliable
 Smoother Operations
 Easy Maintenance
 Cost
DISADVANTAGES

 Drag
 Visibility
 Installation
APPLICATIONS

 Harley Davidson Motorcycles
