Factors Affecting R

eaction Rates
Reaction Rate
• Is the rate at which chemical reaction proceeds
How does chemical reaction
occur?
• Reactions occur when two or more molecules collid
e with each other
Collision Theory
1. Nature of Reactants
2. Catalysts
• When a cacatalys is used, the reaction rate increase
s
• Why? The catalyst lowers wer activation vation req
uired and uire more collisions successfully react.
3. Temperature
• Temperature
•As the temperature increases the reaction rate incr
eases
•Why? Particles with higher temperatures move fast
er and will collide more often
•Also: Particles with higher temperatures have more
energy so when they collide they are more likely to o
vercome the activation energy and react
4. Concentration of Reactan
ts
• As the concentration of reactants increases the reac
tion rate increases
• Why? If the reactants are more concentrated the pa
rticles are closer together and they collide more fre
quently.
5. Surface Area
• As the surface area of reactants increases the reacti
on rate increases
• Why? More surface area means more surfaces to c
ollide with
5. Pressure
• As the pressure on a GAS increases the reaction rat
e increases
•As the volume of a GAS container decreases, the rea
ction rate increases
•Pressure/volume do not affect solids or liquids
• Why? Gas particles are very far apart, so they can b
e compressed if there is an outside pressure; when th
e particles are morecompressed, they are closer toge
ther and collidemore frequently
