What is Weighted Point Method
?

A product comparison tool that uses several key

criteria of predetermined importance to evaluate
competing products or services and arrive at a
numerical score, which is then used as the basis for
product selection.
INTRODUCTION

• In most applications, the selected material should satisfy more

than one functional requirement
• In this method each material requirement (or property) is
assigned a certain weight (which depends on its importance to the
performance of the design).
Steps in weighted point evaluation method
• Decide on evaluation criteria
• Determine importance of each criteria
• Rate each product against all evaluation criteria
• Compute average rating for each product for each criteria
• Weight the product rating by the importance of the criterion
• Compute the total for each rating
• Compare product ratings
HOW TO DESIGN A MACHINE ELEMENT USING
THIS METHOD?
• STEP 1:The first step consists of study of the given application and preparing a list
of desirable properties of the material for application.
• STEP 2:The desirable properties are then assigned values according to their
approximate range of yield strength, endurance limit, cost etc
• STEP 3:The desirable are divided into two groups:
1. GO-NOGO parameter
2. Discriminating parameters
GO-NO-GO PARAMETER
• The go-no-go parameters are constraints. As an
example if material is not available or if it cannot
be fabricated into given shape, it is totally
rejected. This is screening step and only material
which meet the requirement, are allowed
further consideration.
DISCRIMINATING PARAMETER
• The discriminating parameter are the properties of material,
which can be given quantitive values.
• For an example, in case of connecting rod, the endurance
may be given a weighting factor 5 with cost having weighting
factor of 1.
• In general, the weighting factor varies 1 to 5, with 1 for the
poorest and 5 for the best.
WEIGHTED PROPERTY METOD

• In most applications, the selected material should satisfy more than one
functional requirement
• In this method each material requirement (or property) is assigned a
certain weight (which depends on its importance to the performance of
the design)
• This method attempts to:
1. Quantify how important each desired requirement is by determining
a weighting factor.
2. Quantify how well a candidate material satisfies each requirement
by determining a scaling factor.
RANKING OF ATTRIBUTES

• Attributes are characteristics that can be described to distinguish one

item from another
• Some attributes are more important that others. Determining the
relative importance of the various properties assigned to these
attributes is therefore necessary if this method is to be used
• There are two steps for ranking attributes:
rank in order of importance with no consideration of how important
one attribute is to another
a weight is assigned to the importance of each attribute
WEIGHTING FACTORS

• It is desirable to quantify the relative importance of the attributes

• One attribute may be very much more important than another, while
others may be quite similar in importance
• The relative importance is shown by using a point scale that does not
exceed 100 points
EXAMPLE
If strength is 4 times as important as cost, it will be
represented by an 80 / 20 division.Weight 4 times as
important as strength, strength is 4 times as important
is as cost, corrosion is 2 /3 the importance of strength,
etc.
Drawbacks

• The skill and judgement is required for assigning

weightage.
• The results may not be numerically correct.
