Why this team?
• The squad had six batsmen, four pacers, three spinners and V. Sehwag,
R.Ashwin, Piyush Chawla as all rounders. So overall it was a perfectly
balanced team and thus was able to win the world cup.
• This team won the World Cup after 28 years under Dhoni’s captaincy.
• This team has a great signifance in the history of Indian sports and left a
remarkable influence on the current generation.
• Also the mix of senior and young players in the team made their performance
quite unpredictable in the beginning but then things went right due to the
great contribution of the players towards the end of the tournament.
What makes it stand apart?
• The team consisted of experienced players like V.Sehwag , Sachin Tendulkar
which obviously helped the team to overcome difficult situations.

• The fitness level of the players was also one of the many things that contributed
in the success of the team.

• Team India was the first ever team to win the world cup being a host country.

• The Indian team were generally considered to be the strongest batting side in the
tournament, comprising the openers V.Sehwag and veteran Sachin Tendulkar,
playing in his 6th consecutive World Cup, followed by Gautam Gambhir and Virat
Kohli, with Yuvraj Singh, skipper M.S.Dhoni, Yusuf Pathan and Suresh
Raina completing the star-studded batting line-up.
Faced Difficulties

 Due to presence of senior players , there were doubts regarding fielding.

 Before world cup the bowling department was facing some problems with
death overs.
 There were not enough specialist spinners as needed in sub continental
wicket
 Facing difficulties in defending even big targets of run (Example: match with
England which ended in a tie)
How they worked as a team and
overcame difficulties
 The young players such as Virat Kohli, Suresh Raina compensated this by their
high standards of fielding.
 After they lost the match against South Africa and had a tie with England ,
the management revised the team strategy and included more experienced
spinners to overcome the difficulties they were facing in death overs
 Yuvraj Singh being a part time spinner was in a wonderful form. He
compensated for the lack of specialist spinner. For his wonderful performance
he was deemed “Man of the tournament”.
Success Factors

 Unfaltering Leadership – In finals although the game was going

tough, Dhoni played a memorable innings. Like a great leader he rolled up his
sleeves in times of crisis and steer the team clear of any danger. Also Gautam
Gambhir came to the rescue after the poor performance by the top order
batsmen.

 Unity of Purpose – The nationwide support and cheer played an

important part in the success of the team
Success Factors (contd.)

 Team confidence – The confidence level of team members were very

high after recently winning New Zealand series and Australian Series tie
before world cup.

 Team Support – Dhoni as a leader was backed up by his team in every

decision. Every player tried to give their best for the team.

 Hunger to Win – As the last world cup journey was not in the favor of
the Indian team, players were eager to prove themselves on this platform.
Success Factors (contd.)

 Efficient Usage of Management Skills By Leader –

1. Technical: Dhoni as a captain applied specialized expertise in every match
2. Human: The ability to manage and motivate a team was a valuable skill for
the success.
3. Conceptual: Dhoni is often called “Captain Cool” for keeping his calm and
analyze and finding his way through complex situations as he did in the finals.
Conclusion
1. Team India Won because of combined efforts of all the players. Be it
Sehwag and Sachin’s starts, Kohli’s consolidation in the middle order,
Zaheer's consistency, Raina’s finishing abilities, Harbhajan’s full-toss to
dismiss Afridi, Yuvraj’s all round performance, Gambhir’s solid batting
in the finals or Dhoni’s captaincy and of course his 96* in the final.

2. Hence, the combined efforts and well thought of strategies by the

team led them to win the tournament.
