MANAGEMENT OF INDUSTRIAL

DESIGN PROCESS

Engineering Design
INTRODUCTION

• Industrial design is typically involved in the overall

product development process during several different
phases.
• The timing of the Industrial design effort depends upon the
nature of the product being designed.
• Timing of the ID effort it is convenient to classify products
as technology-driven products and user-driven products.
Technology-driven products

• The core benefit of these products is based on its

technology or its ability to accomplish a specific technical
task While such a product may have important aesthetic or
ergonomic requirements
• For example, a hard disk drive for a computer is largely
technology driven
User-driven products

• The core benefit of a user-driven product is derived from

the functionality of its interface and/or its aesthetic appeal.
• Typically there is a high degree of user interaction for these
products.
• The product’s external appearance is often important to
differentiate the product and to create pride of ownership
Tech VS User driven products
Timing of Industrial Design Involvement

ID process is a
sub process of
the product
development
process
Product Development Activity Technology-Driven products User-Driven products
Identification of Customer Need ID typically has no involvement Identify customer needs. Industrial
designers participate in focus
groups or one-on-one customer
interviews
Concept Generation and Selection Safety and maintenance issues are ID generates multiple concepts
often of primary importance. according to the industrial design
process flow described earlier.

Concept Testing create prototypes, which are shown ID leads in the creation of models
to customers for feedback to be tested with customers by
marketing
System-Level Design little involvement narrows down the concepts and
refines the most promising
approaches
Detail Design, Testing, and Most of the engineering details ID selects a final concept, then
Refinement have been addressed. ID receives coordinates with engineering,
product specifications and manufacturing, and marketing to
constraints from engineering and finalize the design

S.no Assessing the Quality of Industrial Design
1 Quality of the User Interface • How easy the product is to use.
• product’s appearance, feel, and
modes of interaction

2 Emotional Appeal • Attractive

• exciting
• pride of owning

3 Ability to Maintain and Repair the Product • Easy, intuitive

4 Appropriate Use of Resources • Value (quality vs. cost)

5 Product Differentiation • Easy to stand out

• recognize, & remember
Example :Realme 3 pro
Assessment Category Performance Rating Explanation of Rating
1. Quality of the User Interface Realme 3pro was both easy to use and
comfortable.Split screen,realme
share,night shield,one handed
mode,assistive ball
2. Emotional Appeal High emotional appeal because back
case had dual colour variant and fine
finishes.
3. Ability to Maintain and Repair the Although maintenance and repair were
Product not of primary importance to the
customer, The battery charged very
quickly but its inbuilted
4. Appropriate Use of Resources Materials were selected for durability
and manufacturability, to withstand
extreme conditions,and to create an
attractive appearance.
5. Product Differentiation clearly unique. It was easily identified
when viewed in a public area or next to
a competitor’s product.
