Confirmation
What is
Confirmation??
And the Misconceptions
Confirmation…
Happened in the early Church and in Arts
The completion of Baptism - Strengthens the
graces
You are saying that this is your faith not just your
parents if baptized as an infant
Increases the Gifts of the Holy Spirit
Maturation of the soul for the work ahead
Occurs when you reach the “age of discretion”
Confirmation…
Ancient (Acts 19) - Paul the Apostle lays his
hands

A person’s own Pentecost. - The Catechism of

the Catholic Church says, The sacrament of
Confirmation is the full outpouring of the Holy
Spirit as once granted to the apostles on the day
of Pentecost
Misconceptions…
It is a type of “Graduation” - it is not the end, but
the beginning
It is not “becoming an adult in the church”
Not a sacrament where one claims/affirms the
faith for himself - strengthens the faith, not cause
it
Does not “complete the initiation” or “make you a
full Catholic”
How is the
Sacrament of
Confirmation done? (And its effects)
How it is done

• You stand or kneel before the priest

• The sponsor will lay one hand on your shoulder

• The priest will anoint you by using oil of Chrism to make the Sign of
the Cross on your forehead and say “Be sealed with the gift of the
Holy Spirit”

• You respond, “Amen”

• The priest will then say, “Peace be with you”

• You respond, “And with your spirit” or “And also with you”
How it is done

You will hear this prayer:

"All powerful God, Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, by water and the
Holy Spirit you freed your sons and daughters from sin and gave them
new life. Send your Holy Spirit upon them to be their Helper and Guide.
Give them the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of right
judgment and courage, the spirit of knowledge and reverence. Fill them
with the spirit of wonder and awe in your presence"
(Rite of Confirmation, #25).
Its Effects

• The full outpouring of the Holy Spirit

• Binding us more closely to the Church and more firmly to

Christ

• Increasing the gifts of the Holy Spirit in us, especially his

strength to spread the faith by word and deed.

• A more intimate relationship with Jesus Christ

• A special mark on the soul that can never be erased
