Text –types according to

Purpose
What are text types?
Texts are written for a variety of purposes, using
different forms and standards of composition.
These forms of writing are known as text types.
Broadly speaking, there are two main text types,
factual and literary. Within these are many more
narrowly defined text types. Factual text types
include such types as factual description, recount,
or persuasive. Literary text types include such
types as poetry, narrative or personal response.
1. To classify and describe
Classify means to sort items or ideas
into categories according to
commonalities. It allows the author to
take an overall idea and split it into
parts for the purpose of providing clarity
and description. Sorting can take place
on many levels with topics, subtopics,
categories, subcategories, and so on.
Describe means to tell what a
person or thing is like. Its purpose is
to describe and reveal a particular
person, place, or thing.

Recall means to recount or retells an


experience that happened in the past.
