11.1 Definition of Transformations
 A transformation is a movement of a
point or an object from its original
position to a new position.
Determine which one the object
and the image
11.2 Definition of Translation
 Translation is a transformation which
moves all the points on a plane in a
certain direction and through the same
distance.
Two ways to describe translation:

 By stating the direction and distance of

the movement.
 In the form of  a 
 
b 
Example:
 In the figure below, triangle ABC is
translated 5 units to the left and 3 units
up to get the image triangle A'B'C'.
Example:

Draw a triangle in the coordinate plane and translate it (6,-4)

Example
is the image of point P under a
Q(2,5)
translation of 1 3 . Find the coordinates of
point P .
Solution:
  3
 
1 
P ( x, y ) Q(2,5)

x  (3)  2

x  2  3
1
y 1  5
y  5 1
4

Therefore, the coordinates of P are (1,-4)

11.3 Definition of reflection
 A reflection is a transformation where all
the points in a plane a reflected in a lined
called the axis of reflection.
Example:
 The figure below shows triangle ABC reflected
across the line y = x + 2.
Reflection about line mirror
Worksheet 1
  3
1) Q (2,5) is the image of point P under a translation of   .
1 
Find the coordinates of point P.
2) If S (6, s ) is the image of T (t ,4) under a translation of   4  ,
9
find the value of s and t .  
3) Determine the coordinates of the image of each the following
points under a reflection on the x-axis.
a) (4,5)
b) (-5,7)
c) (0,-2)
d) (-10,-3)
4) Determine the coordinates of the image of each the
following points under a reflection on the y-axis.
a) (6,8)
b) (-1,9)
c) (-5,-7)
d) (9,0)
