K T WEIR

Micro Irrigation Dams

Presentation By:
Mane Pratik .
Semester V ( Shift )
C.E ( Civil Engineering )
1) INTRODUCTION
 The Kolhapur type weirs ( K
T Weirs ) and bridge cum
barrages built across dams
and rivers are used to
regulate the water flow and
storage.
 This type of bandhara are
commonly constructed in
Kolhapur district and are
termed as Kolhapur type
weirs.
 It is fully open weir consisting number of piers having side
grooves for fixing wooden needles .The needles are put across the
piers for the required height to form a continuous weir. The height
of weir can be changed by removing the needles and putting
additional needles.
2) Objectives :

1) To design the K T Weir gates in a

material which would last longer.
2) It should be easy to install.
3) It should have less value for resale
4) It should be available at a right price
point
5) It should look attractive and aesthetic.
6) Gates should work as desired.
Selection Of Site For K T Weir.

Upstream Side Downstream Side

The following conditions should exist for selecting a site for K T
Weir :
1. Availability of good rock at the site giving easy foundation
conditions.
2. The bed of nalla or stream is particularly flat or with a very mild
slope idea being to have a large storage of water with a small
height of bandhara.
Construction Of K T Weir

Procedure
 Suitable site for construction is selected.
 This is a structure similar to barrage type construction.
 The sufficient openings are kept in nalla portion so that there
Is no afflux to the monsoon discharge.
 Masonry piers with regular grooves are provided with
standard openings of 2 meters. These openings are blocked by
means of needles in two rows filled with paddle in between them.
 The needles are placed in the grooves provide in piers.
 The size of wooden needles is 15 cm height , 5 cm thick
and 2 m in length . These wooden needles are placed into the
openings by the fag end of monsoon to store the post monsoon
water.
 It is necessary to restrict the number of openings by the
because of the considerable difficulties involved each time in
placing the wooden needles at the faged of the monsoon and
removed of them just before the monsoon.
The height and top width of bandhara.
 The height and top width of bandhara are sometimes
provided Taking into consideration of other utilities of this
structure such as bridge-cum-bandhara.

1) The width – 2 m if it is to serve as foot bridge and

2) The width – 4 m if it is to treated as road bridge.
Replacement Of Needles
 The wooden needles are
required to be replace in
about 5 years time. The
recovering expenditure is
heavy on these needles.
 In order to avoid this
expenditure , mild steel
needles depending on the
availability and economics of
material and on the local
conditions.
 These K T Weirs have
become very popular
especially in sugar factory
areas.
Advantages
 The main advantage of k t weirs are
optimum utilization of water for irrigation
and water supply, no need for frequent
site clearance as in case of check dams
and no energy dissipation arrangements
are required.
 They are used to regulate the water flow
and storage
Conclusion :

 Bythis mini project we are able to know

how the construction and maintenance
of k t weir is done and also understand
the need or importance of K T Weir.
Thank you
