PROBLEM STATEMENT

❧ The mines have become a source of income to a
wide range of families in South Africa and the whole
world.On the 5th of february 2016 a sinkhole
occured at Lily mine in Mpumalanga ,a number of
workers were found and 3 are still trapped
❧ However one can ask.

What causes the mines to be so dangerous and life

threatening?
And what can be done to minimise these incidents.

❧ Nowadays mining is one of the
most economic sector which
contributes largely to the economy
of the country
❧ Many people are employed in this
sector and thus the work is
very dangerous and difficult and
lthreatened by incidents such as
sinkholes
❧ a sinkhole is a cavity on the
ground surface FIGURE 2 : (Source:

CONCLUSION

Above all challenges that are faced by mine

workers ,the mining sector is helping in

South africa as well as other countries. The
accidents of the formation of sinkholes in
mines are slightly natural disasters but are
caused by us human beings ,by our human
activities. We all should take responsibility in
ensuring the safety of everyone .
TECHNIQUES FOR EARLY
DETECTION

Sinkholes are very dangerous and can

collapse and swallow buildings as well
as people unexpectedly ,but before
that happens one can detect earlier by
observing
the movement of poles,soil, slumping
trees and fence post and sometimes
structural cracks in walls .Mines in
south africa should employ scientist or
people who are responsible only in the
detection of the ground and geology. FIGURE 3: (Source:

ACCOUNTABILITY FOR SINKHOLES
RELATED TO MINING ❧
Sometimes the officials of the mining company
may be involved in corruption by hiring unqualified
geological engineers ,that endanger the lives of
the workers. The government on the other must do
follow ups in mines to check if the mine company
is following safety procedures and everything is
serviced
