Meaning and Use
• When do we use the Simple Past tense?
 We use the Simple Past to express the idea that an action started and
finished at a specific time in the past.
 What are some common time expressions used with the past tense?

Regular verbs spelling rules


To form the affirmative pasat tense of most regular verbs:
• Add –ed to base form of the verb (wash-washed).
• If the verb ends in –e, add –d (live=lived).
• If the verb ends in a consonant preceded by a vower, double the final
consonant (stop-stoped).
• If the verb ends in –y preceded by a consonant, omiy the “y” and add –ied
( copy-copied).
