o Line of text included on

o Folio is the page number


and date on each page
HEADLINES
o Words in large print that
capture the reader’s
attention

o Written in san serif font


(san serif in Latin means
without tails)
SUBHEAD
o A headline that appears
under, above, or to the
side of the main headline

o Has smaller font size


compared to the
headline
KICKER
o Short headline above the
main headline

o Kickers are different


from subhead
BRIEF
o Small story

o Usually on the second page

o These are local, national,


international news briefs

o Examples:
 Daily Brief
 Sports Brief
INDEX
o A listing, usually on page
one that tells where to
find certain sections or
features

o Arranged alphabetically,
or of specific information
in a publication
EARS
o Refers to the white
space on either side of
the newspaper’s name on
the front page
SIDEBAR
o Secondary story that
gives the reader
additional sidelights
of a major story
BYLINES
o Tell the names(s) of
the reporter(s) who
wrote the story
DATELINE
o These are the words
at the beginning of
the article that give
the location of the
story

AND CUTLINE
o Cutline is a caption,
usually found under or
alongside the photograph
and telling something
about the photograph
SKYBOX OR
TEASER
o Text and/or visuals above
the flag that highlight
articles inside the
newspaper
o Also refers to a
promotional box or
advertisement that is
usually above the
nameplate
CHARTS
o Graphical
representation of
data
PULLOUT
QUOTES
o Quotation or excerpt
from an article that is
typically placed in a larger
or distinctive typeface on
the same page

o Short sentence or phrase


pulled from a story and
set in larger type that the
copy test

o With single quotes around


the text
JUMP LINE
o Line at the bottom of an
article that tells the
reader where to turn for
the rest of the story
STAFFBOX
o Includes the names of
the editors, a phone
number, and usually a
statement of policy
