Methods And Treatments

To Reduce Cadmium
Poisoning
Reducing The Risk Of Exposure:
1.Stop smoking. Cigarette smoke contains cadmium that can be
absorbed through the lung
2.Eat a healthy and balanced diet. Be sure of adequate iron in the
diet.
3.Keep nickel cadmium batteries out of reach of young children.
fumes of the other fossil
fuel where cadmium could be present.
6.Reduce as far as practicable emissions of cadmium,
particularly in to surface waters from mining and smelting,
application of sewage sludge to the land.
7.Develop techniques for the safe disposal of cadmium
containing wastes and effluents.
8.Promote effective measures to the recycling of cadmium
and to restrict non recyclable uses.
9.Raise global awareness on the importance of minimizing
waste discharges of cadmium.
Preventive Measures In The
Workplace:
It includes:
1.Improving ventilation by opening windows, running an
exhaust fan.
2.Wearing proper personal protective equipment such as
respiratory protection, protective clothes eye protection and
gloves.
3.Maintaining a clean work area free of dust.
4.Showering and changing of clothes immediately on
the completion of work and disposing of
contaminated clothing in the worksite.
5.No smoking, eating and drinking in the work area.
Laboratory Evaluation:
Tests that should be performed if cadmium inhalation is
suspected.
1.Measurement of oxygen saturation.
2.Renal and hepatic functions – to check for signs of liver or
kidney damage.
3.Cadmium blood levels. Blood cadmium indicates recent
exposure and urine cadmium indicates body burden.
Treatments:
The mainstay of management for most inhalation exposure
victims is supportive treatment including:
1.Fluid replacement,
2.Supplemental oxygen, and
3.Mechanical ventilation.
