(STDs)
What are STDs?
• STDs are infections that are
passed from one person to
another during vaginal, anal,
and oral sex. They’re really
common, and lots of people
who have them don’t have any
symptoms.
• Most STDs affect both men and
women, but in many cases the
health problems they cause can
be more severe for women.
COMMON TYPES OF STDs
SYPHILIS
• Syphilis is a really common STD. Syphilis is
spread through vaginal, anal, and oral
sex.
• Syphilis causes sores on your genitals
(called chancres). You get syphilis from
contact with the sores.
• A lot of people with syphilis don’t notice
the sores and feel totally fine, so they
might not know they have it.
• Syphilis can infect
your vagina, anus, penis, or scrotum, and
sometimes your lips and mouth.
SYMPTOMS OF SYPHILIS
• Primary Stage- Syphilis sores (known as Chancres) can show up on
your vulva, vagina, anus, penis, scrotum, and rarely, your lips or
mouth. The sores may also hide deep in your vagina, under your
foreskin, inside your rectum, and other places that are hard to see.
• Secondary Stage- includes rashes on the palms of your hands, soles
of your feet, or other parts of your body. You may feel sick and have
mild flu-like symptoms, like a slight fever, feeling tired, sore throat,
swollen glands, headache, and muscle aches. You can also have sores
in your mouth, vagina, or anus, and weight or hair loss.
• Last Stage- includes tumors, blindness, and paralysis. It can damage
your nervous system, brain and other organs, and may even kill you.
You can help prevent syphilis by
using condoms and/or dental
dams every time you have sex.
Syphilis can be easily cured with
medication if you treat it early.
But without treatment, it leads
to really serious, permanent
problems like brain damage,
paralysis, and blindness. That’s
why STD testing is so important
— the sooner you know you
have syphilis, the faster you can
get rid of it.
GONORRHEA
Gonorrhea is spread through
vaginal, anal, and oral sex. The
infection is carried in semen
(cum), pre-cum, and vaginal fluids.
Gonorrhea can infect
your penis, vagina, cervix, anus, ureth
ra, throat, and eyes (but that’s rare).
Most people with gonorrhea don’t
have any symptoms and feel totally
fine, so they might not even know
they’re infected. Gonorrhea
symptoms show up within about a
week of being infected.
SYMPTOMS OF GONORRHEA
• Pain or burning feeling when you pee
• Abnormal discharge from the vagina that may be yellowish or bloody
• Bleeding between periods
• Yellow, white, or green discharge from your penis
• Pain or burning feeling when you pee
• Pain or swelling in your testicles
• Itching in or around your anus
• Discharge from your anus
• Pain when you poop
Gonorrhea is usually easily cured with antibiotics. But if you don’t
treat gonorrhea early enough, it can lead to more serious health
problems in the future. That’s why STD testing is so important — the
sooner you know you have gonorrhea, the faster you can get rid of
it. You can help prevent gonorrhea by using condoms every time you
have sex.
CHLAMYDIA
Chlamydia is spread through
vaginal, anal, and oral sex. The
infection is carried in semen
(cum), pre-cum, and vaginal fluids.
Chlamydia can infect
the penis, vagina, cervix, anus, uret
hra, eyes, and throat. Most people
with chlamydia don’t have any
symptoms and feel totally fine, so
they might not even know they’re
infected.
SYMPTOMS OF CHLAMYDIA
• pain or burning while peeing
• pain during sex
• lower belly pain
• abnormal vaginal discharge (may be yellowish and have a strong
smell)
• bleeding between periods
• pus or a watery/milky discharge from the penis
• swollen or tender testicles
• pain, discharge and/or bleeding around the anus
• Chlamydia can be easily cleared up with
antibiotics.
• You can prevent chlamydia by using
condoms every time you have sex.
HUMAN PAPILLOMAVIRUS (HPV)
• The most common STD.
• There are more than 200 types of
human papillomavirus (HPV). About
40 kinds can infect your genital area —
your vulva, vagina, cervix, rectum, anu
s, penis, and scrotum — as well as
your mouth and throat. These kinds of
HPV are spread during sexual contact.
(Other types of HPV cause common
warts like hand warts and plantar
warts on the feet — but these aren’t
sexually transmitted.)
• Most genital HPV infections aren’t harmful at all and go away on their
own. But some kinds of HPV can lead to genital warts or certain types
of cancer.
• Two types of HPV (types 6 and 11) cause most cases of genital warts.
Warts are no fun, but they’re considered low-risk HPV because they
don’t lead to cancer or other serious health problems.
• At least a dozen types of HPV can sometimes lead to cancer, though
two in particular (types 16 and 18) lead to the majority of cancer
cases. These are called high-risk HPV. Cervical cancer is most
commonly linked to HPV, but HPV can also cause cancer in
your vulva, vagina, penis, anus, mouth, and throat.
 SYMPTOMS OF HPV
• High-risk HPV doesn’t have
symptoms
• Unfortunately, most people who
have a high-risk type of HPV will
never show any signs of the
infection until it’s already caused
serious health problems. That’s why
regular checkups are so important.
In many cases, cervical cancer can
be prevented by finding abnormal
cell changes that, if left untreated,
could develop into cancer.
CURE/PREVENTION
• There’s no cure for HPV. But there’s
a lot you can do to keep HPV from
having a negative impact on your
health. There are vaccines that can
help protect you from ever getting
certain types of HPV. Genital warts
can be removed by your nurse or
doctor. High-risk HPV can usually be
easily treated before it turns into
cancer.
HERPES (Oral and Genital)
• Herpes is caused by two different but
similar viruses: herpes simplex virus type
1 (HSV-1) and herpes simplex virus type
2 (HSV-2). Both kinds can make sores pop
up on and around
your vulva, vagina, cervix, anus, penis, scr
otum, butt, inner thighs, lips, mouth,
throat, and rarely, your eyes.
• Herpes is spread from skin-to-skin
contact with infected areas, often during
vaginal sex, oral sex, anal sex, and kissing.
Herpes causes outbreaks of itchy, painful
blisters or sores that come and go.
SYMPTOMS
(GENITAL)
• burning when you pee if your urine
touches the herpes sores
• having trouble peeing because the
sores and swelling are blocking
your urethra
• itching
• pain around your genitals (Oral)
• swollen glands in your pelvic area, • sores on your lips or around your
throat, and under your arms

There’s no cure for herpes, but medication
can ease your symptoms and lower your
chances of giving the virus to other
people. And the good news is, outbreaks
usually become less frequent over time,
and even though herpes can sometimes
be uncomfortable and painful, it’s not
dangerous. People with herpes have
relationships, have sex, and live perfectly
healthy lives.
 SCABIES
• Scabies (pronounced skay-bees) is caused
by scabies mites — tiny, insect-like parasites
that infect the top layer of your skin.
Scabies causes rashes, irritation, and a ton
of itching. It’s easily spread to other people
during skin-to-skin touching.
• Scabies mites burrow underneath the top
layer of your skin and lay eggs. The eggs
lead to more mites, but most people with
scabies only have about 10-15 mites on
their body at a time. The mites are super
small so you might not see them, but you’ll
probably notice the itching and irritation
they cause.
SYMPTOMS
• Intense itching that gets
worse at night.
• Rashes that have pimple-
like bumps, tiny blisters, or
scales.
• Small, raised, crooked lines
on your skin (caused by
the scabies mites
burrowing under the
surface of your skin).
Places where people usually get a
scabies rash include:
• the webbing between your
fingers
• where your wrist, elbow, or knee
bends
• pubic and groin areas
• breasts
• belly button
• penis and scrotum
• thighs and the lower part of your
butt
• shoulder blades
• around your waist
Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV)
• HIV stands for Human Immunodeficiency
Virus. It’s a virus that breaks down
certain cells in your immune system (your
body’s defense against diseases that
helps you stay healthy). When HIV
damages your immune system, it’s easier
to get really sick and even die from
infections that your body could normally
fight off.
• HIV is carried in semen, vaginal fluids,
anal mucus, blood, and breast milk. The
virus gets in your body through cuts or
sores in your skin, and through mucous
membranes (like the inside of the vagina,
rectum, and opening of the penis).
 SYMPTOMS
The signs of AIDS include:
• Thrush (a thick, white coating on your tongue or
mouth)
• Sore throat
• Bad yeast infections
• Chronic pelvic inflammatory disease
• Getting bad infections a lot
• Feeling really tired, dizzy, and lightheaded
• Headaches
• Losing lots of weight quickly
• Bruising more easily than normal
• Having diarrhea, fevers, or night sweats for a
long time
• Swollen or firm glands in your throat, armpit, or
groin
• Deep, dry coughing spells
• Feeling short of breath
• Purplish growths on your skin or inside your
mouth
• Bleeding from the mouth, nose, anus, or vagina
• Skin rashes
• Feeling very numb in your hands or feet, losing
control of your muscles and reflexes, not being
able to move, and losing strength in your
muscles
STDs in Philippines (2017 News Report)
• The Philippines has registered the fastest-growing HIV/AIDS epidemic
in the Asia-Pacific in the past six years with a 140-percent increase in
the number of new infections.
• At the end of 2016, there were 10,500 Filipinos infected with the
human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) up from 4,300 in 2010.
• “We’re not talking about those that are openly gay,” Samonte told a
news conference. “Any male who has sex with another male for
whatever reason, is at risk.” Two out of three new HIV infections were
among 15 to 24 year-old men, who she said have insufficient
awareness of HIV, its symptoms and treatment.
