Friction welding is a metal joining process that was first developed in the Soviet Union in 1956. It works by applying mechanical friction between two workpieces to generate heat at their surfaces, which is then used to join the pieces by applying pressure. The process involves clamping one workpiece stationary while rotating the other, applying pressure until plastic forming temperature is reached, then stopping rotation and continuing pressure until welding is complete. It has applications in industries like automotive, marine, oil and electrical.

hISTORY Friction welding was first developed in the Soviet Union, with first experiments taking place in 1956. What is friction welding Friction welding is a metal joining process in which the workpieces are joined together by producing heat from mechanical friction’ WORKING PRINCIPLE Friction welding works on principle of friction. In this welding process, the friction is used to generate heat at material surfaces. This heat is then used to join two work pieces by applying pressure force at the surface of work piece HOW IT WORKS First both work pieces are attach on the chucks One chuck is rotating while the other one will remain stationary Then one workpiece is rotated by chuck and apply little pressure force is applied on stationary workpiece Now a high pressure force applied to the stationary work piece which force it toward rotating work piece and generates a high friction force. This friction generates heat at the contact surface. It is applied until the plastic forming temperature is obtained. When temperature reached the desire limit and rotor is stopped and then apply force until the whole weld is joined Diagram of processes of friction welding Continuous induced friction welding: In this welding process rotor is connected to band brake when friction crosses the plastic forming temperature then band come into an action which stops the rotor but pressure force is applied on stationary work piece until the weld form Inertia friction welding: In inertia friction welding the band brake is replaced by the engine flywheel. The flywheel connect chuck to the motor.. When the speed or friction reaches its limit, the engine flywheel separated from the motor. The pressure force is applied to the work piece until the weld is formed APPLICATIONS • Friction welding has many applications in daily life . • It is used for welding of tubes and pipes. • It is used in automobile, marine and oil industries. • It is used in electrical industries for welding copper and aluminium equipments and • It is used in welding of pump shafts.
