Monsoon

1
A monsoon is a seasonal
change in the direction of the
prevailing, or strongest, winds of a
region.
Monsoon always blow from
cold to warm region. The summer
monsoon and the winter monsoon
determine the climate for most of
India and South Asia.
-National Geography
We experience 2 types of monsoon
winds in the Philippines, namely the
NORTHEAST MONSOON, and the
SOUTHWEST MONSOON

During winter, the
Asiatic continent is
snowbound and the high
pressure cell in China
sends northeasterly winds
over the Philippines, giving
us cold temperatures, and
causing much rainfall over
the eastern coast. This
happens during the months
of November to February.
During the summer
of Northern hemisphere
the Asiatic Continent
becomes warmer than
the surrounding seas
and a low pressure cell
develops over continent.
This causes the flow
of moist Southwest wind
over the Philippines.
8
When this southwest
flow becomes thick in
depth, it persists for long
period causing continuous
rains which may last for
weeks during the months
of June to September.
Thus aside from typhoon,
the Southwest monsoon is
responsible for the great
portion of the rainfall
during our wet season.

Marine and Coastal
Processes

Storm surge is a
dome of water 65-85
kilometers wide that
sweeps across the coast
near the point where the
eyes makes landfall . Storm
surge is the height of the
water above normal tide
level. It adds 2-5 meters to
normal tide height – to say
nothing of tremendous
wave activity superimposed
atop the surge.
The most important
factor responsible for the
development of a storm
surge is the piling up of
ocean water by strong
onshore winds. As
hurricane advances toward
the coast, storm surge is
always intense on the right
side of the eye where winds
are blowing toward the
shore. The
For some structures, the
forces of the wind is sufficient
to ruin. Mobile houses are
particularly vulnerable. Strong
winds can create a dangerous
barrage of flying debris. Strong
winds affect much larger area
than storm surge and can cause
huge economic losses.
The torrential rains that
accompany hurricanes represent
at third threat – flooding heavy
rains may affect places hundreds
of kilometers from the coast for
several days after the storm.
Hurricanes weaken as they move
inland, yet remnants of the storm
can still yield 15-30 centimeter of
rain as they move in land.

Tides are caused by differences in
the gravitational pull exerted by the moon on
the Earth.
The moon’s gravitational force is
strongest on the side of the Earth nearest
moon, and weakest in the side farthest from
the moon.
