Interactions

Among Living
Things and
Nonliving Things
in Tropical
Rainforest
How will you describe this
ecosystem?
– An ecosystem, is composed of living and nonliving
things
– The living part of an ecosystem consists of the
different species or organisms
– Each species is part of the ecosystem’s population
– The populations make up a community
How will you describe this
ecosystem?
– These environments are all of the external factors
affecting an organism
– These factors may be plants, or animals, or other
organisms (biotic factors) or
– living components(abiotic factors) such as rainfall,
temperature, length of day, water, nutrients, oxygen,
Carbon Dioxide
I am the I am the I am very small I am very
biggest one in slowest-moving but I can climb colorful and
all my family. I animal of all. I trees, cut
have a big
can hop, swim, hang from the leaves, and
and croak like branches in the carry them to strong beak to
the smaller canopy and I my nest even crack and open
ones you see. am so still they are 50 the tough shells
Who am I? predators don’t times heavier of nuts. Who
see me. Who than me. Who am I?
am I? am I?
Tropical Rainforest Ecosystem

• Are very dense, warm, and wet forests

located in the band of equator
• Tropical rainforest are found in South
America, Australia, West Africa, Southern
India, and Southeast Asia
• Philippines has tropical rainforest too
Tropical Rainforest Ecosystem

– Terrestrial ecosystem is divided into

biomes, which are taiga, deciduous
forest, tropical rainforest, desert,
tundra, and grassland
– Each biome has its own kind of climate,
soil, and plants and animals
Tropical Rainforest Ecosystem

–BIOME: a distinct ecological

community plants and
animals living together in a
particular climate
Components of a Tropical
Rainforest

– Tropical rainforest biome consists of close growing trees

and other plants
– The leaves of trees overlap or cover each other, forming
shades on the underground species
– Overlapping leaves prevent much sunlight from reaching
the floor
ABIOTIC FACTORS (Physical
Conditions)

– Tropical rainforest has a climate that has warm

temperature and large amount of rainfall
– Temperature is between 20˚ C and 25˚ C
– Tropical rainforest has tall trees about 30 to 55 meters in
height
– Trees can create continuous layers of plants
BIOTIC FACTORS (Plants and
Animals)

– Tropical rainforest is the most diverse of all land

biomes
– Haven for millions of plants and animals
– Half of all plants and animals in the world are found
in the rainforest
BIOTIC FACTORS (Plants and
Animals)

– PLANT SPECIES: The tropical rainforest has a

complex structure with many levels of life
– Tall, broad leaves of trees with branches, heavy
mosses, ferns, and orchids make up the canopy of a
forest
BIOTIC FACTORS (Plants and
Animals)

–ANIMAL SPECIES: most animals in the

rainforest live in the different layers of
trees
–Chimpanzees, elephants, orangutans, bats,
sloths, cobra snakes
BIOTIC FACTORS (Plants and
Animals)

–ANIMAL SPECIES: most animals in the

rainforest live in the different layers of
trees
–Chimpanzees, elephants, orangutans, bats,

The Layers of
the Rainforest
Layers of the
Rainforest
1.Emergents
2.Canopy
3.Understory
4.Forest floor
EMERGENTS
Tall giant trees that are much higher than the
average canopy height
Emergent trees are 130 to 180 feet tall
It is very sunny here and only the strongest and
tallest plants reach this level.
Canopy
is teeming with life as it is rich in fruits and
seeds. Animals such as insects, birds,
monkeys, frogs and sloths are found here.
It is said the canopy layer is home to 90%
of animals in the rainforest
Canopy
–Much sunlight is blocked by this layer as
a result of the large, thick, overlapping
leaves that absorb a lot of sunlight and
shade the plants below.
Understory
–The understory layer is a tangle of
shrubs, young trees, saplings, palms and
vines. It is hot and damp here and the air
is very still.
Understory
–This layer is dark. Plants here see very little
sunlight compared to those up in the canopy.
Lack of light limits plant growth and those
successful at surviving here must have special
adaptations to deal with the gloom.
Understory
–This layer is dark. Plants here see very little
sunlight compared to those up in the canopy.
Lack of light limits plant growth and those
successful at surviving here must have special
adaptations to deal with the gloom.
Understory
–This is a red-eyed tree frog and they
live in the understory layer of
rainforests in Central America. They
are nocturnal creatures.
FOREST FLOOR
The forest floor is the lowest layer where it
is dark, hot, and damp
Only 2 percent sunlight gets through the
thick canopy trees and understory plants to
reach the forest
