FEM Assignment - 1

Finite Element Analysis of a structure using

ANSYS.
Problem
◆ Use software like ANSYS to do a full FEA
of the given structure.

◆ Repeat the same analysis for one quarter

of the structure, with proper boundary
conditions

◆ Find the value of stress concentration

factor Kt for both cases.
Step 1 : Choosing Material and
engineering data
◆ Structural steel was chosen by default as a
standard material for the simulation.
Step 2 : Designing the model in
ANSYS
◆ The Model with suitable dimensions is then
designed in CAD plugin of ansys.
Step 3 : Add meshing to the
structure
◆ To run finite element analysis on the
structure using ANSYS, Meshing is added.
Step 4 : Setup for the simulation
◆ A pressure of 16000 Pa is given on each
side of the structure, directly normal to the
surface in x direction.
Step 5 : Solving the setup
◆ The setup is run by ANSYS for equivalent
stress, Maximum shear stress and solution
is found and graphed.
Solution for full structure.
Step 7 : Using Symmetry to Cut
quarter of structure out for analysis
◆ Symmetry tool in ANSYS is used on axes ZX and YZ to
chop the structure into a quarter that can be used for
further analysis.
Step 8 : Adding Proper Constrains
◆ Constraints are added to the structure to simplify the problem by running only in quarter of a
structure.
◆ Constraints added are
1. Zero Displacement in Y Direction on the lower face of model.
2. Zero Displacement in X Direction in Left side of the model
Step 9 : Solving the setup
◆ The setup is solved again for Equivalent
stress, Maximum shear stress and the
results are graphed.
F=116N
Area =78mm*mm
Theoretical Stress:=F/A=116/78=1.4871MPa

Full Model:
Maximum Stress:1.5332MPa
Stress concentration:1.5332/1.4871=1.0309
Quarter Model:
Maximum Stress:1.5328MPa
Stress concentration:1.5328/1.4871=1.0307
Results and Conclusion
◆ The values of Max. Equivalent stress in full analysis and quarter
analysis are, 1.5332 MPa and 1.5328 MPa Respectively

◆ The stress values for both are roughly same and follow same,
symmetric patterns along the full structure.

◆ The value for Kt in both cases is 1.0309 and 1.0307 resp.

◆ This concludes that with proper boundary conditions we can reduce

computation time by using symmetry conditions wherever applicable.

◆ Total computational times were observed in ANSYS and they are 2.1
sec and 1.2 sec for full and quarter structure respectively, which
concludes that comp. times can be reduced by doing partial analysis.
