FIELDS
TOGETHER
THE ELECTRIC AND MAGNETIC
FIELDS TOGETHER
Acceleratingelectrons
produce electromagnetic
fields
Electromagnetic waves are
a combination of electric
and magnetic fields.
THE ELECTRIC AND MAGNETIC
FIELDS TOGETHER
A changing magnetic field
produces an electric field and a
changing electric field produces
a magnetic field
 Both the electric field and
magnetic field oscillate
perpendicular to each other
resulting to an electromagnetic
wave

ELECTROMAGNETIC WAVES
All electromagnetic wave
can travel through a medium
and they can also travel in
vacuum
They travel in vacuum at a
speed of 3 x 108 m/s and
denoted as c, the speed of
light
v= λf
In electromagnetic
waves,
c= λf
c- speed of light (m/s)
λ- wavelength (m)
f- frequency (Hz)
Sample Problems:
1. What is the frequency of
radio waves with a
wavelength of 20 m?
Given: v=c= 3 x 108 m/s
λ = 20 m
f=?
Solution:
f =c/λ
3 x 108 m/s
=
20 m
f = 1.5 x 10 Hz

2. What is the wavelength
of light waves with
frequency 6 x 1014 Hz?
Given: v=c= 3 x 108 m/s
f = 6 x 1014 Hz
λ=?
Solution:
λ =c/f
=
3 x 108 m/s
6 x 1014 Hz
λ = 5 x 10 m
