CHAPTER I

THE PROBLEM AND ITS

BACKGROUND
INTRODUCTION
Managing your time well can help you develop
and improve in your career. Organizing each day
helps you to complete work on time and give you
space to be creative and proactive in your tasks.
Having strong time-management skills can
ultimately lead to accomplishing key goals and
advancing in your position.
Time management is very important and it may
actually affect individual's overall performance
and achievements. However, all of these are
related by how individuals manage their time to
suit their daily living or to make it flow steadily
with their routines specifically the student that
spent most of their time at school to learn.
CONCEPTUAL FRAMEWORK OF THE
STUDY
The studying habits of Grade 10 students in Our Lady Of
Lourdes College will affect their time management as shown
in the figure below.

Figure 1.1 The Paradigm of the Study

THEORETICAL FRAMEWORK
OF THE STUDY
According to the theory of Sharma (2016), time management is
important for students to do the study with focus and to get high marks.
Student’s success in studies depends much on managing time efficiently.
The habits and morals they acquire during schools time and home will
stick with them throughout the future. Time management shapes the
student’s mind into the direction of discipline and sense of duty. Discipline
is extremely important especially in school life to become better students.
Time management is a skill that enables students to use their time
productively and efficiently. Time management is not taught as an
academic subject in schools. Students have to utilize their 24 hours to
become the best students and experts in the subject. The focus of
learning time management skills is just to develop the habits of spending
time wisely.
The Bucket of Rocks Theory
To properly manage time, one needs to know the level of
importance that each activity holds. The Bucket of Rocks
theory (also referred to as the Pickle Jar Theory) offers insight
into the order in which a person should work on his activities
(Mancini 2003). The theory proposes that you put big rocks in
a bucket (this will represent the important thing) and then you
fill it up with pebbles followed by sand and then water. The
smaller substances represent increasingly unimportant tasks
(Forsyth 2010).
According to this theory, we are supposed to do the important
things (big stones) first and then move on to the less important
things (pebbles and sand) and finally if we have the tie, we can
do the unimportant things (water). If we begin working on the
unimportant things or the less important things first, we will not
have the space to do the important things in our lives.
STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM
The objective of this study is to determine the percentage
of selected grade 10 students in OLLC and their studying habits in
relation to time management. It aimed to answer the following sub-
problems:
1. What is the description of the respondents in terms of
the following selected personal variables:
a. Gender
b. Age?
2.) What are the studying habits of grade 10 students?

3.) Is there a significant difference between the studying

habits of Grade 10 students and time management? Why?

CHAPTER II
REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE
AND STUDIES
In this chapter, researchers will introduce the
collected information about the students and their
studying habits in relation to time management. This
literature analysis includes articles, journals and
thesis that explain how to be an effective student
when it comes to managing time and how to come up
with better studying habits. Each section is orderly
under related literature, foreign and local, and related
studies.
REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE
The key to becoming an effective student is learning
how to study smarter, not harder. This becomes more and
more true as you advance in your education. An hour or two
of studying a day is usually sufficient to make it through high
school with satisfactory grades, but when college arrives,
there aren't enough hours in the day to get all your studying in
if you don't know how to study smarter. While some students
are able to breeze through school with minimal effort, this is
the exception. The vast majority of successful students
achieve their success by developing and applying effective
study habits. So if you want to become a successful student,
don't get discouraged, don't give up, just work to develop
each of the study habits below and you'll see your grades go
up, your knowledge increase, and your ability to learn and
assimilate information improve. (Loveless, 2019).
CHAPTER III
METHODOLOGY

RESEARCH DESIGN
This study will be using Quantitative Correlational
Design which aimed to determine the Grade 10
students of Our Lady Of Lourdes College 2019-2020
to their studying habits in relation to time management
Essentially the design focused on the factors that
affect their schedules and applying a proper time
management strategies that can help them to same
time.
According to SNAM Razali (2016), time management
is very important and it may actually affect individual's
overall performance and achievements. Students
nowadays always commented that they do not have
enough time to complete all the tasks assigned to
them. In addition, a university environment's flexibility
and freedom can derail students who have not
mastered time management skills. Meanwhile, all the
time management behaviors are significantly positively
related to academic achievement of students although
the relationship is weak. Time planning is the most
significant correlated predictor.
REVIEW OF RELATED STUDIES
According to Sirohi (2005), there are many factors responsible for
academic failure of students like motivation, study habits, attitude towards the
teacher, attitude towards the subjects, school and home background,
concentration, mental conflicts, level of aspiration, self-confidence,
examination, fear, etc. He found in his study of achievement in relation to
study habits that the most significant factor contributing to low achievement is
poor study habits which have been indicated by most of his respondents in
the study. Sirohi concluded that 98.7% of underachievers tend to possess
unfavorable attitude towards the teacher and have poor study habits. As for
Smith and tittle field (2006), poor study habits not only retard school progress
but develop frustration, destroy initiative and confidence, the feeling of
worthlessness towards himself, whereas effective methods ensure success,
happiness and sense of accomplishment. Moreover, students with poor study
habits do not perform well academically, have low self-concept and
consequently, see little benefit to academically perform at their true ability. it is
believed that improvement in basic academic skills can increase the
opportunity for achievement and quality school experiences (Natalie, 2005)
and with this success, raise positive self-concept and attitudes towards
school. (Kallman, 2006).
According to Rosete (2010), academic performance had high
significant relationship with study habits among students it is
very necessary for their cognitive development further implies
that study habits are potential factors that influence the
academic performance of students hongnee (2005), found
that study habits had highly significant relationship with
students grade Lalitha (2007) describes that studying is
essentially hard work and concludes that students who are
not prepared to make appropriate effort are wasting their
time. Time management is a skill few people master, but it is
one that most people need.
Moreover, Seebach (2006) suggests a study break
(not relaxation break) after every 5 to 20 minutes in which to
recall what has been studied. Sometime spent on rest and
relaxation may actually save time in the long-run.
SYNTHESIS OF RELATED LITERATURE
AND RELATED STUDIES
The quality of students’ studying
habits can actually affect their
performance academically. In addition,
preparing good time management will
then help the students to accurately and
strategically perform in school. To do
this, students must learn proper time
management as well as the studying
habits they should avoid.
RESEARCH LOCALE
The respondents of this study are from Our Lady Of
Lourdes College (OLLC), it was founded on 1986 in response
to need for students managing their time in junior high school
students in Our Lady Of Lourdes College. This offered an
opportunity for the researcher to look for the more possible
cases and respondents that will met the criteria needed in the
study.

RESEARCH INSTRUMENT
Giving survey questionnaires will be used to collect
data from respondent. Since the respondents are Grade 10
Student from Our Lady of Lourdes College.
DATA COLLECTION
This study will use primary data collection method
where the data are going to be collected through survey form.
The researchers will provide questionnaires to determine the
percentage of Grade 10 students of Our Lady of Lourdes
College and their studying habits in relation to time
management.
POPULATION AND SAMPLING TECHNIQUE
The researchers selected participants that met the following
standard qualification. The chosen respondents must be grade 10
students of Our Lady Of Lourdes College. Hence, the said
respondents must be willing to participate and are not forced in
order to answer the questionnaire. The non-probability of
sampling used is purposive since they are following attributes and
characteristics that is needed in choosing respondents.
Statistical Treatment
To interpret the date effectively, the researcher will employ
the following statistical treatment. The Percentage, Weighted
Mean and T-test are the tools use to interpret data.

1.Percentage
This will employ to determine the frequency counts and
percentage distribution of personal related variables of the
respondents.
Formula:
% is the percentage
F is the Frequency
N is the total number of respondents
100 is a constant value
2. Average Weighted Mean
This will be used to determine the assessment of the
respondents with regards to their personal profiles.
Formula:
X is the weighted mean
F is the frequency
x is the weight of each item
N is the number of cases
3.Analysis Of Variance (ANOVA)
This will be helpful in making comparison of two or
more means which enables a researcher to draw various
results and predictions about two or more sets of data.
Steps in ANOVA
1. First step is to compute the total sum
of the squares.
2. Second step is to compute the
squares between columns.
3. The third step is to compute for the
sum of squares within the column.
4. To complete the ANOVA table,
calculate the mean of sum of squares.
