Tyre Condition Awareness

Tyre and personnel safety is a subject that is of very big importance to all industry.
Tyres are pressure vessels and are very dangerous.
The steel cords in a tyre is the strength of a tyre and they are covered by rubber thus
one cant see the condition of then.
We have daily tyre incidents that we all see but don't talk or report it to the relevant
people. It is better to question a situation than being sorry after words, tyres store a large
amount of energy and if this energy is released it has the potential power to demolish or
level a building.

Example : If one had to park a Toyota Kijang on top of a 10.00-20 truck

tyre and inflate it until it burst the force in the tyre will lift that Kijang
20m in to the sky.
Cosmetic Damage
Cuts and cosmetic damage to tyres are not a good thing but in a mining application
tyres get damaged and it needs to be monitored so that a tyre that has hazarders
damage can be removed. A tyre that has a cut will not fail in a explosive manner but it
can still be harmful to a man when he is near the tyre.

A bigger concern is a obstacle in the road like a rock or a hole, a rock or hole can cause
a sudden pressure rise when driven over thus causing a tyre to burst, explode or
damage the cords.

If the cords are damaged and the damage is not visible the tyre becomes a rolling
hazard that can fail at any time and place.

Inflation in Workshop
1. After the tyre has been fitted to the rim the inflator must inspected the wheel.
2. The inflator can now start to inflate the tyre until the components are locked in to
place and the beads are seated ( lock ring and bead seat band) not more than
20Psi or 1.4bar. If the lock ring and bead seat band dose not lock at this pressure.

……………….. ! ! Stop Inflation ! !.......................

Remove faulty components and replace.
3. Inspected the wheel again to make sure that the components are fully interlocked. If
the beads don't seated, inflate to 30Psi or 2.1bar.
4. If the beads are not seated at this pressure ( 30Psi or 2.1bar). The tyre must be
removed from the rim, inspected and refitted.
5. Fit wheel to mobile.
6. Inflate the tyre to 50Psi or 3.5bar.
7. Move mobile to inflation area and inflate to recommended pressure.
8. Do not inflate mobile equipment near or inside a workshop.
Tyre Inflation
Inflating a tyre is a delicate process and special care must be taken when this is done.

1. The inflation gauge, pipe and connector are delicate tools and must be stored or kept
in a safe place and handled with care.( Do not drop or drag it on the ground)
2. The person (inflator) inflating the tyre must have the necessary training and
knowledge.
3. The inflator must not leave the inflation gauge until the tyre is at its correct pressure.
4. The area around the tyre must be demarcated, to worn off roaming personnel.
( minimum 20m in all direction)
5. No person but the inflator can enter this area wiles in process.
6. If the inflator has the need to leave the area he must be replaced by a competent
person (inflator), and the inflation process must not continue unless the status of the
inflation process has been communicated to the replacement inflator.
What do we do ??
Think of safety, tyre safety
Talk about tyre conditions daily.
Do not fiddle with tyres if you are not trained for the
job.
Improve tyre conditions together.
Help one and other to learn more about tyres.
