CONCEPTUAL IDEA BEHIND THE PROJECT
• The village was produced with the idea that the residents were
going to alter it in many ways, therefore homes are free standing.
• Differently priced plans appeal to a wide variety of income level.
• Despite the small size of the site, the architect managed to
endow every home with its own private open to sky courtyard.
• The community site plan divides the unit into group of 21, further
sub dividing them into 7 unit cluster.

PRINCIPLE INVOLVED IN THE PROJECT

Seven “Cardinal Principles” demonstrated by Correa

• Open to sky spaces

• Incrementality
• Pluralism
• Participation
• Income generation
• Equity
• Disaggregation Access Road

EVOLUTION OF DESIGN

The project is generated by a hierarchy of spaces. The first is the private courtyard of single dwelling used as a space for outdoor
activities during most of the year. Subsequently, seven units are grouped to form a small courtyard town of about 8m x 8m.
Three of these groups form a module of twenty-one homes that describes the collective space of the next scale (approximately
12m x 12m).

MATERIALS AND CONSTRUCTION
• Technology – external walls are of brick ,
wooden roof structure covered with
Mangalore tiles.

• Materials – brick, plaster of white colour,

colourful wooden fixtures, outdoor paving
stone blocks.

• Individual houses relay on simple floor

plans and building methods, enables local
masons and craft people to construct
them.

• The village was produced with the idea

that residence were going to alter in
many ways, therefore homes are free
standing.
PROBLEMS FACED
The village originally had a high concentration of artist.
Today, less than 10% of the residence are artists. Rest of
them work in service sector

Reason for leaving their homes

• No provision were made for the common spaces in the

centre of each cluster of house.
• No one was in charge of maintaining
• Concept of keeping toilet block outside was not
appreciated
• Some clusters of the village became mini slum.
• Studio spaces 70-75 sqm were too small to work in and
also to stay in.
