INTRODUCTION
Bubble Deck Slab
Biaxial hollow core slab
Invented by Jorgen Breuning in Denmark
1990’s
Eliminates concrete
Reduces structural dead weight
Realization of longer span

MATERIALS
• Plastic spheres : Spheres made from HDPE. It
does not chemically react with concrete or
steel.
• Steel : Steel reinforcement of MS or HYSD in
two forms may be used – meshed layer for
lateral support & diagonal girders for vertical
support of the bubbles.
• Concrete : Standard Portland Cement with max
aggregates of size 20mm.

TYPES OF BUBBLE DECK
1. Type A - Filigree Element

2. Type B – Reinforcement modules

7
3. Finished Planks

CONSTRUCTION
• Two Methods
a. 1st Method – system is pre-cast off site
b. 2nd Method – entire system is constructed on
site
• Both methods use same 3 components
1. Plastic balls
2. Steel Cage
3. Concrete

9
• Contact between bubble and reinforcement
 Do not fit perfectly between bars.
 Moves slightly during assembly and
compaction.

10
TEST PROCEDURE
• Simply supported and loaded at single point.
• Tested at ages of 28 days.
• Measured mid span deflection at the end of
each load increment.
• At the advanced stage of loading smaller
increments were applied until failure.

• Total length – 960mm, • Only 10mm aggregate is

PROPERTIES OF BUBBLE DECK
SLAB

17
SHEAR RESISTANCE
• Due to reduced concrete volume, shear
resistance will also be reduced.
• Shear resistance of bubble deck slab is 0.6
times the shear resistance of solid slab.
• Near columns – same as solid slab.

18
DURABILITY
• Bubble deck slab have chamfer at inside, hence
no direct route to air outside.
• Less cracking compared to solid slab at same
stress levels.
• Possesses continuous mesh at top and bottom,
hence ensures shrinkage restraints.

19
DEFLECTION
• Deflection of bubble deck slab is 5.88% more
than solid slab.
• Bubble deck slab can withstand 80% of stress
when compared with solid slab.

20
FIRE RESISTANCE
• Products of combustion are relatively benign,
certainly compared to other materials that
would also be burning in the vicinity.
• The Balls simply carbonize. No toxic gasses will
be released
• The ball would melt in prolonged fire,
eventually char without significant or
detectable effect.

21
WHY BUBBLE DECK SLAB ?
No compromise for strength & serviceability
Flat slab technology
Longer spans
Pre-fabricated & Cast in-situ

Fig 6 22
ADVANTAGES
• Material and weight reduction.
• Structural requirements of columns and
foundations are decreased.
• Construction time can be shortened.
• Cost is reduced.
• Environmentally green and sustainable.
• Cost and time saving.

23
CONCLUSION
• Weight reduction is 35% compared to solid slab.
• Volume of concrete is less (25%).
• Concrete usage reduced up to 10 to 25% as 1Kg
of recycled plastic replaces 100Kg of concrete.
• Reducing material consumption made the
construction faster and overall cost reduced by
8-10%.
