Sweeney Todd: The Demon
Barber of Fleet Street

This year, during the Halloween season, the

Canton Players’ Guild put on a wonderful performance of Sweeney Todd:
The Demon Barber of Fleet Street at the Canton Palace Theater. I
personally love the Palace Theater, especially the ceiling, which is
made to look like the night sky. I’ve also played many a game of hide
and seek in the Palace, and when I was I the Concert Band, I would
love being the first one to the theater so I could check out the
Palace Theater’s ghost light.
More to the point, the performance of Sweeney Todd grabbed my
attention at once. The show began with fog rolling out from under the
ancient red curtain that hangs in the Palace. Then, the voice of Mrs.
Lovett came over the loud speaker, informing the audience that there
would be no flash photography for the sake of the performers and that
all cell phones were to be turned off. Any violation of either of
these rules would result in a trip to Mr. Todd’s barbershop for a
close shave.
Next, the curtain rose and we found ourselves
staring at a stage full of swirling fog littered with mysterious
figures that began to sing “The Ballad of Sweeney Todd”. Now, all
of the music in the show is written by Steven Sondheim, so really
you have to give the cast credit that they didn’t sing it
perfectly. It wasn’t so much that they were out of key (though
the Good Lord knows that Sondheim likes to change up the key as
often as humanly possible), but Mr. Sondheim threw an
unprecedented number of rests at them in the middle of the song.
Of course, Steven also comes up with the most ridiculous rhythms
on the face of the Earth, I’m supposing just to keep the audience
guessing or something like that, though really it just left the
cast guessing.
Anyway, skipping ahead, it seemed that most of the show,
or at least the first act, was made entirely out of songs. It
really just made the show seem more like an opera than a musical.
I’ve also never really cared for the way the Player’s Guild moves
their sets around. They don’t close a curtain or anything, which
I think kind of takes away from the magic of the theater. At any
rate, for having such a young cast (Mrs. Lovett was 18 and
Sweeney Todd was 24), the show was decent and for all the flaws
the Player’s Guild really knows how to put on a good show.
The common topics that you mighy be asked to write
about is a literature book or a movie. Most students are usually
asked to prepare a critique for a movie because, in the modern
world, this is one of the trending entertainment resources that
most people are fond of watching. Movies are influential to many
people and utilized to pass their information to the audience.

To come up with great content for your movie or book

analysis, you have to....
