Application of engineering in

biology
Dr Nishu Goyal
Department of Chemical engineering, UPES
Bioengineering
• The application of principles of biology and the tools of engineering
to create usable, tangible, economically viable products
Examples
• bacteria engineered to produce chemicals
• new medical imaging technology
• portable and rapid disease diagnostic
devices, prosthetics, biopharmaceuticals, and tissue-engineered
organs
Chemical engineering applications
• Biochemical engineering, also known as bioprocess engineering,
is a field of study with roots stemming from chemical
and biological engineering.
• Deals with the design, construction, and advancement of unit
processes that involve biological organisms or organic molecules
and has various applications in areas of interest such as biofuels,
food, pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, and water treatment
processes
• Role of a biochemical engineer is to take findings developed by
biologists and chemists in a laboratory and translate that to a
large-scale manufacturing process.
Petrochemical engineering applications
• Microbial Enhanced Oil Recovery (MEOR) is an alternate recovery
method that uses microorganisms and their metabolic products :
Biodesulfurization, biodemetallation, biodenitrogenation and
biotransformation
• Versatility of microbial metabolism and its intrinsic ability to mediate
transformation of complex raw materials at a wide range of reaction
conditions
• Petroleum Geomicrobiological prospecting, MEOR, Microbial
biodesulfurization of different petroleum streams,
Biodenitrogenation, Biocracking, Pipeline biocorrosion
GIS/GSE engineering applications
• Biological invasion is an increasingly important scientific research
area because of possible ecological and economic impacts of species
invasions
• GIS (Geographic Information System) can aid in analyzing
potential biological species invasions by modeling the spatial spread
of exotic species
• Tools for prediction of epidemic for the intervention measure
• To better understand and manage natural and built environments,
investigate the spread of disease, locate services, guide route
selection or mine the big data of social media to understand human
behavior, mobility and communication patterns
Mechanical engineering applications
• Biomechanics - study of living organisms including their kinematics
• Carbon nanotubes antibodies now exist that can identify and destroy
tumor cells. Many experiments have been done to show the
possibility of anticancer immune reaction increase of tumor cell by
using CNTs as delivery Media
• CFD software like Ansys, Solidworks, OpenFOAM, ADINA, etc. are
playing a key role in medicine and biology, where researchers create
virtual reconstructions of different human organs, surgical options,
and blood flow system.
Biomedical engineering
• Application of engineering principles and design concepts to medicine
and biology for healthcare purposes
• Tissue engineering
• Genetic engineering
• Neural engineering
• Pharmaceutical engineering
• Clinical engineering
• Bioinformatics
• Biomechanics
