INTRODUCTION
What is 5G?

● 5G refers to Fifth generation-Next major phase of mobile

telecommunication and wireless system.

● 10 times more capacity than others.

● Expected Speed upto 1Gbps , more faster and reliable.
● Highly supportable to WWWW(Wireless World Wide Web).

What does it offer?

3G-Operator Centric , 4G-Service Centric whereas 5G-User Centric

● With the advent of the Internet of Things (IoT) and the goal to enable the next
generation mobile network - 5G, there have been advancements in both
microelectronic circuits and device technologies to achieve this.
● Our Case Study describes some of the device technologies currently in development
at Analog Devices, focusing on key areas for future integration within the 5G
ecosystem.
● Three distinct device technologies are :
1. RF MEMs switch
2. Energy Harvester for IoT applications
3. An RF SAW filter.
RF MEMS SWITCH

● What is MEMS?
● Active Open MEMS.
● How applicable to 5G systems implementation ?
● Construction of MEMS Switch.
● RF performance.
THERMOELECTRIC ENERGY GENERATOR
● Thermoelectric energy harvesting devices enable self powered systems for IoT
applications bringing sensors to places previously thought impractical or inaccessible.
● They also reduce operating expense and maintenance cost of battery replacement.
● The device in focus here converts waste heat into electrical energy through the
Seebeck effect.
MACHINE HEALTH MONITORING
SURFACE ACOUSTIC DEVICES
● Surface Acoustic Wave devices (SAW) are acoustic devices commonly used
for high frequency filtering applications.

● Acoustic waves are generated by applying an alternating voltage across

electrodes on the piezoelectric. As the piezoelectric starts to oscillate in it
generates an acoustic wave, the resonant frequency being a function of the
spacing between the electrodes

● This wave is received at a second set of electrodes and converted back to an

a.c. voltage.
ADVANTAGES
● Compact , cost efficient , easy to fabricate , less power consuming.

● Can be used as Filters ( example RF SAW Filter ), sensors, signal processing

units and actuators.

● RF Saw filters can be used to implement passive RF wake up systems for use in
Wireless sensor based applications.
