MODALS: MUST – HAVE TO – CAN

 We use CAN and to talk about ABILITY.

Ex: Teacher angel CAN play table tennis very well

 It is also possible to use BE ABLE TO for ABILITY.

Ex: Teacher angel IS ABLE TO play table tennis very well


MODALS: MUST – HAVE TO – CAN

 We use CAN to talk about POSSIBILITY.

Ex: The students CAN use dictionaries in class.

 It is also possible to use BE ALLOWED TO for POSSIBILITY.

Ex: The students ARE ALLOWED TO use dictionaries in class.


MODALS: MUST – HAVE TO – CAN – SHOULD – OUGHT TO

 We use SHOULD to give ADVICE.

Ex: Students SHOULD read more.

 It is also possible to use OUGHT TO for ADVICE.

Ex: Students OUGHT TO read more.


 HAVE TO = HAVE GOT TO

 I have to work tonight = I´ve got to work tonight

 Have got to is very common in speaking English.

 Must and have to have very similar meanings in their positive form:

 I must go = I have to go
have to is more common than must
 We can´t use MUST in the past. We use HAD TO.

 I had to work overtime yesterday.

BE SUPPOSED TO

 It means an OBLIGATION. It is something that you should do, or


something that another person expects you to do.

Ex: Students ARE SUPPOSED TO have a book.
