INTRODUCTION

 Illustrate /ˈɪləstreɪt/ - To clarify or explain, as by the use of examples or comparisons

 Synonyms – interpretation, analogy, demonstration, etc.

 Data Visualization – An endless attempt to compress data into images

 Relevance: Digital Age => Information Overload => Need smart and effective mechanisms
 Using traditional graphics as well as finding new ways to encode and plot data
 Graphic form of data also helps to reveal patterns and relationships
PURPOSE OF VISUALS

 Emphasize
 Clarify
 Simplify
 Reinforce
 Summarize information
 Add interest
 Improve credibility
PURPOSE OF VISUALS

 Emphasize
- Newspaper reporters and Advertising copywriters are well aware of its of its importance
- An image can make a difference

Around 15,000 protesting farmers,

including many elderly ones, began
walking from Nashik
PURPOSE OF VISUALS

 Clarify  Simplify
- Something which is difficult to express in - Simplify data or complex processes
words alone can be conveyed using
illustrations
- Eg: Architectural designs
PURPOSE OF VISUALS

 Reinforce  Summarize
- Presenting information in more than one way, - Presenting essential information and
rather than mere repetition minimizes the amount of reading
- Increase reader retention - Eg: Business Model Canvas
PURPOSE OF VISUALS

 Add Interest  Improve Credibility

- What do you look when you turn to next - Eg: Revenues for a segment have “increased
slide/page? dramatically” from December 2009
- Tedious and lengthy text narrative is uninteresting
CRITERIA FOR EFFECTIVE VISUALS

 Four basic standards that apply to all visuals - Simplicity, Contrast, Unity, Balance

Simplicity Contrast
- Else diverting reader’s attention and likelihood - Achieved by separating graphic from text
of misunderstanding; Simplicity Eg: Traffic Signs - Contrast within the visual itself
- Using different colors, shapes, style, dotted lines
CRITERIA FOR EFFECTIVE VISUALS

 Balance  Unity
- Refers to sense of equal weight among the components of the - To give impression that
visual representation all parts belong and fit
together.
- Unbalanced vs Balanced (decreasing order of bar segments)
- Eg: Standard formatting,
same colors, etc.
• Title: title to be placed above the  Introduction and Placement
visual
• Description: description to be
concise and self explanatory
• Source of data: Mention the
secondary source of data
• Placement: it is preferred to keep the
charts and figures in the report than
in the appendix. However it depends
on the context of the report and
reader’s preference. Place the visual as
close to text as possible
 Introduce>Display>Discuss  The Visual

• Introduce: Introduce the visual with a

concise title
• Include main point, visual no.
• Display: following the introduction,
display the visual asap.
• Fit within margin of narrative
• Leave few inches of margin from narrative
• Place the visual in the same page
• In case not possible, continue with
discussion
• Place visual horizontally/vertically
depending on the size of the visual
• Discuss: If discussion is lengthy, start
discussion post display
• Else discuss along with introduction
followed by visual
ETHICAL REPRESENTATION

 Skimmers see visuals when they don’t read text

 Visuals memory is retained longer
 Visuals have emotional impact that words lack
 Misleading graphs: distorted graph(omitted data, vertical scale, skips number, doesn't start from zero,
scale too big/small, inapt graph labels, etc.)
CHOOSING CUES AND CONSTRUCTING VISUALS

ANIMATION AND INTERACTIVITY

Types
• Low Level interactivity: Users see
certain stored data when they point
to/hover over a visual
• Medium Level Interactivity: Users
can click a visual to view more
detailed data/link to related data
• High Level Interactivity: Users can
influence / modify content of the
visual eg zoom in/out
