COURTYARDS AS A SPACE

An unroofed area that is completely or partially enclosed by walls or buildings, typically one
forming part of a castle or large house.

- ANERI SHAH
CA’ GRANDA - UNIVERSITA STATALE

Entrance courtyard – This enormous large courtyard gives a feeling of just an entrance because it is used
only for transition purpose.
Pharmacy courtyard – This courtyard gives a sense of peaceful and calm environment which makes it a
formal space for people to do meditation or have formal discussions.
Courtyard with broken columns – This
courtyard has a space with full columns and
also a space with broken columns.

The space with full columns works as a formal

space, while the space with broken columns
gives a sense of openness (free space), which
makes it an informal space for people to chill
and play.
