AWARDS IN

ENGINEERING PHYSICS AND RELATED FIELDS

NOBEL PRIZE IN PHYSICS

 “The said interest shall be divided into five equal parts, which shall be apportioned as
follows: /- - -/ one part to the person who shall have made the most important discovery
or invention within the field of physics ...” (Excerpt from the will of Alfred Nobel)
 Physics was the prize area which Alfred Nobel mentioned first in his will from 1895. At the
end of the nineteenth century, many people considered physics as the foremost of the
sciences, and perhaps Nobel saw it this way as well. His own research was also closely
tied to physics.
 The Nobel Prize in Physics is awarded by The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences,
Stockholm, Sweden.
The Nobel Prize in Physics 2018
“for groundbreaking inventions in the field of laser physics”
 Arthur Ashkin “for the optical tweezers and their application to biological systems”
 Gérard Mourou and Donna Strickland “for their method of generating high-intensity, ultra-
short optical pulses”
UNESCO NIELS BOHR MEDAL

In 1985, the 100th anniversary of the birth of Niels Bohr, UNESCO minted a gold
medal to commemorate the father of quantum physics and one of the most
eminent scientists of the 20th century. Sculpted by Siv Holme-Muse of
Sweden, the medal bears the profile of Bohr while the rear depicts his
drawing of electrons orbiting around an atomic structure, his formula E2-
E1=hy2 representing electrons in relation to hydrogen, and his signature. It
also bears the inscription: Contraria sunt complementa (Opposites are
complementary), Bohr's principle of complementarity
Recent recipients include :
 Alain Aspect
 CERN (presented to Rolf-Dieter Heuer)
 Jimmy Wales
ALBERT EINSTEIN AWARD

The Albert Einstein Award was an award in theoretical physics that was established
to recognize high achievement in the natural sciences. It was endowed by the
Lewis and Rosa Strauss Memorial Fund in honor of Albert Einstein's 70th birthday. It
was first awarded in 1951 and, in addition to a gold medal of Einstein by
sculptor Gilroy Roberts.
The winner was selected by a committee (the first of which consisted
of Einstein, Oppenheimer and von Neumann) of the Institute for Advanced Study,
which administered the award.
Recent recipients include :
 Tullio Regge
 Stephen Hawking
 Eugene Wigner
HUGHES MEDAL

The Hughes Medal is awarded by the Royal Society of London "in recognition of an
original discovery in the physical sciences, particularly electricity and magnetism
or their applications". Named after David E. Hughes, the medal is awarded with a
gift of £1000. The medal was first awarded in 1902 to J. J. Thomson "for his
numerous contributions to electric science, especially in reference to the
phenomena of electric discharge in gases", and has since been awarded over
one-hundred times. Unlike other Royal Society medals, the Hughes Medal has
never been awarded to the same individual more than once.
Recent recipients include :
 George Efstathiou
 Peter Bruce
 James Durrant
DIRAC MEDAL

The Dirac Medal is the name of four awards in the field of theoretical
physics, computational chemistry, and mathematics, awarded by different
organizations, named in honor of Professor Paul Dirac, one of the great theoretical
physicists of the 20th century.
The first-established prize is the Dirac Medal for the Advancement of Theoretical
Physics, awarded by the University of New South Wales, Sydney, Australia, jointly
with the Australian Institute of Physics on the occasion of the public Dirac Lecture
Recent recipients include :
 2017 Francesco Evangelista
 2018 Erin Johnson
 2019 Satoshi Maeda
