TECHNOLOGICAL PROGRESS IN

THE LAST 50 YEARS

How computers, telephones and cars changed.
COMPUTERS
THE 60S
Back then computers were
different from the ones
that we know today.
In 1963 the CDC 6600
„supercomputer” came out.
It was capable of
calculating 3 million
operations per second. A
single copy costed 3 million
dollars, which was the
reason why it wasn’t
popular among common
users.
PERSONAL COMPUTERS
In the 1980s personal
computers were
becoming popular. It
was the time when the
Apple II and the IBM Apple II
PC came out, costing
$1300 and $1500-$6000.

IBM PC
MODERN PCS
Since the 80s the number of
transistors and overall
power in PCs gradually
increased.
Moore’s Law, pictured on the
next slide, shows it
perfectly.

A modern PC beats old PCs

both in terms of power and
comfort of use.
MOORE’S
LAW
Moore’s Law
states that the
number of, for
example,
transistors in
hardware
technology
doubles every 2
years.

years
CELL PHONES
FIRST PROTOTYPE
In the year 1956 a
company named
Ericsson created
the first prototype
of a cell phone. It
weighted 40
Kilograms and was
luggage-shaped. It
costed as much as a
good car.
THE 80S
In 1983 a company
named Motorola
introduced the
DynaTAC. The device
was brick-sized,
weighted 0,8 KG and
its battery lasted for
just 30 minutes while
in conversation mode.
It costed $4000, which
is equal to about
$9500 now. It is also
worth mentioning DynaTAC The inventor of DynaTAC – Martin
Cooper
that you could only
make calls in the
centre of Chicago.
THE
PHONE
EVOLUTION

Cell phone
technology
developed
throughout the
years.They
gained the
ability to send
SMS messages,
some had built-
in cameras and
the overall
power increased.
Who knows what
happens next?
CARS
 50 years ago cars
would break up
very often and
were slower than
the modern ones.
They also had The Trabant, manufactured in
NRD
much simplier
engines that would
burn lots of fuel
and weren’t very
friendly for the
enviroment.

EQUIPMENT
BACK THEN

The equipment of old

cars consisted of a set
of wrenches and a
fire exhauster (don’t
ask why).
THESE DAYS
 Cars these days use an
electric fuel intake,
making them more
friendly for the
environment while
also burning less fuel.
They break less often
and are way faster.
EQUIPMENT
THESE DAYS

 Modern cars are way

more convenient.
Almost every single
car uses an ABS
system, parking
sensors, a GPS, an air
conditioner and safety
systems.
TYPES OF FUEL –
TODAY VS BACK THEN
 Old cars used petrol mixed
with lead. This so-called
technology is not used A hybrid-engined Toyota Auris
anymore.
 The newest engine
technologies include hybrid
mode, which is a mix of a
fume engine and an electric
engine.
 Over the past couple of
years, engineeres introduced
cars powered solely by
electricity.
 There are also prototypes of An electric Tesla car
hydrogen-powered engines.
The Syrenka –
then and now 
