DEFINITION
Hyaline membrane disease (HMD), the pathologic correlate of respiratory distress syndrome (RDS) of the newborn, is largely an acute
lung disease of premature infant caused by inadequate amounts of surfactant. Decreased surfactant results in insufficient surface
tension in the alveolus during expiration, leading to atelectasis, decreased gas exchange, and severe hypoxia and acidosis.

Lung features can become opaque in severe cases
Diagnosis Presence of hyperinflation (unless the
patient is intubated)

• The diagnosis of HMD can be removed if the patient's

chest X-ray at 6 hours appears normal.
