What is Optical Disk Drive?


• Uses a laser light to read data from or
write data to an optical disc.
• Allows you to play music or watch movies
using pre-recorded discs.
• Allows you to write to an empty disc or
create a backup copy of important data.

1. CD-ROM
• Stands for Compact Disc Read-Only
Memory.
• Stores computer data of graphics, text and
audio.
• Popular for software and other multimedia
applications
• Commonly store up to 700MB of
information
Types of CD-ROM Drive
1. CD-R
• known as Compact Disc Recordable and
WORM (Write Once Read Many)
• A blank disc that users can put into a CD-ROM
drive to burn or make a copy of their personal
data, music, videos and information.
• Use special software to burn specific types of
media or data.
• Users would select “Audio CD” to burn music
or “DATA” to burn documents and files.
2. CD-RW
• known as Compact Disc Rewritable and
returned to its original blank state.
• They are not compatible with most disc
players to listen to music.
• Compatible with rewritable disk

3. CD-DA
• Stands for Compact Disc Digital Audio.
• Also known as Audio CD
2. DVD-ROM Drive
• Stands for Digital Versatile Disc Read Only
Memory.
• Commonly used for storing large software
applications.
• Stores around 4.7 GB of data
• It was first introduced in November 1996
Types of DVD-ROM Drive
DVD-R
• Stands for Digital Versatile Disc Recordable
• Can be used to record data.
• Once a DVD-R has been “burned”, or
written to, it cannot be written to again.
• Applicable for single-sided which can be
stored from 4.7GB up to 8.5GB of data and
Double-Sided can store 9.4GB of data.
DVD-RW
• Stands for Digital Versatile Disc Rewritable
• Can be used to record data.
• Same as DVD-R, DVD-RW can be
burned/written data but can be erased and
written to again.
• Can hold 4.7GB of data and do not come in
double-layered or double sided version like
DVD-R.
DVD-RAM
• Stands for Digital Versatile Disc Random
Access Memory.
• Can be used to record data.
• It is writable DVDs that can be erased and
rewritten like DVD-RW.
• It can hold 2.6GB of data on a single-sided
disc and 9.4GB of data in double-sided discs.
