Preparation of resin by rice husk treated with

phosphoric acid for removal of Zn from Industrial

effluent
Rice is harvested in large amounts worldwide,

produced around 740 million tons. Rice husk,

besides organic components constituted by

cellulose, lignin and hemicellulose, also contains

around 20% of silica (SiO2). The combustion of

organic components at temperatures between 550

and 700°C leads to rich silica ash (SiO2) in an

amorphous state.
FTIR :

These pattern display bands in the interval of wavenumbers

between 500 and 4000 cm -1 . The band with wavenumber

3402 cm-1, located at the OH stretching zone, corresponds to

the silanol (SiOH) group. The band centered at 2916 cm-1

corresponds to the methyl group attributed to the presence

of lignin . The stretching of aromatic rings are visualized by

the wavenumber 1426 cm-1, while the groups Si-O-Si can be

seen at 1100 cm-1 . The bands centered at 800 and 464 cm-1

are associated to the Si-H bonds.

Preparation of acid treated Rice husk:

• The rice husk was screened and washed with de-ionized water to remove dirt and metallic impurities after which it was
dried in the oven at about 105 C for 2 hours.

• The dried rice husk was grounded and sieved in the mesh in the range between 250μm and 150μm in order to increase
its surface area .

• The modification was done by chemical treatment of 50g of the sieved rice husk with 1.0M ortho-phosphoric acid
(H3PO4) heated on the magnetic stirrer at 100 C until it totally formed a paste.

• The modified rice husk was washed with de-ionized water until the pH ≈ 6. It was later dried in the oven at about 800C to
remove moisture
