Project in brief
Objective:
Design of small scale pyrolysis plant for converting waste plastics into
fuel.
Problems Encountered:
• Selection of catalyst.
• Attainment of reaction temperature.
• Choice of coolant.
• Utilization of pyrolysis gases.
Need Analysis
• India generates 5.6 million tonnes (15,342 tonnes per day) of plastic wastes per
year.
• North America witnessing significant growth for demand of plastic fuels.
• Of the 62 million tonnes of plastic produced by urban area, 94% can be recycled.
8% of plastic waste is in high altitudes.
• At the ongoing rate of the waste dumping in India, approximately 1,240 hectares of
the land will be required every year to be used as a landfill site.
• Plastic lifecycle can be expanded by recycling but only for a few number of times
after which it is then disposed to a landfill.
