THE KIDNEYS

The kidneys

 The kidneys are best described as two bean shaped organs

located at the back of the abdominal cavity one on each side of

the spinal column that filter the blood in human body. Their

major function is to sustain body’s chemical balance by getting

out waste products and excess fluid in the form of urine.

 To break down the nutrients, chemical reactions happen

in the cells of your body. This chemical reaction

produces body waste that is categorized as unnecessary

stuff that the body does not need. The kidneys now are

the ones responsible for its excretion.

The Path of Urine

 The waste material that is collected combines with water

which turns as urine that is filtered out of the kidneys. As

each kidney produces urine the urine passes through a

long tube called the ureter.

It is then collected by the bladder which is a storage sac that

holds the urine.

When the bladder is about halfway full your body sends a

signal that you need to go the restroom. When you urinate the

urine passes from the bladder down another tube called the

urethra and totally goes out of your body.

There are several ways water leaves your body. It
comes out of your skin as sweat comes out of the
mouth once you breathe and most of the time as urine
when it passes through your urethra. Water is also
present in your bowel movement.
Keeping a Balance

Another important function of the kidneys to control

the fluid balance of the body and help in reabsorption
of water glucose and amino acids which is called
homeostasis. Your body takes in water or any other
liquids when you drink. Food like fruits and
vegetables are also good sources of water.
There are instances when you will notice that your
urine becomes darker color . Remember if you will not
take a lot of fluids particularly water and when you
are not exercising and sweating a lot urine produces
less water in it and it appears darker.
Insights
 Did you know that a person’s kidneys filter at least 1

to 11/2 gallons of blood that circulates around

his/her body 400 times a day. These filters are
called nephrons [NEH fronz]. They are so small that
you can only see them using a high powered
microscope.
