1 INTRODUCTION

 Mechatronics meets biology for it aims to increase the

knowledge on how biological systems work.

 Monitoring is a fundamental aspect of species conservation and

research. The focus of this study is to monitor small mammals
and have allowed glimpses into unknown aspects of their
behavior to be specific, the habitats of red squirrel which
integrates automated video and sound recording, carries out
body weight measurements and takes hairs samples with a bait
station in a Portable Perspex Box and has the potential to
determine the range of small mammal species.

 New technologies may offer a wider range of monitoring options

(movement and/ or heat activated cameras in remote locations)
and increase rare observations of small mammal behavior
2 DISCUSSIONS

• The Small Mammal Monitoring Unit (SMMU) integrates several

monitoring approaches (species recognition using a camera, hair
samples, body weight measurements, activity patterns).

• The use of bait is a common practice in squirrel monitoring.

• More importantly, the close cooperation between mechatronics

and biology enables a new dimension of data collection.
2 DISCUSSIONS

• Length of squirrel visits at SMMU in

relation to time of day illustrating that
visits in the morning lasted longer.
3 APPLICATION OF STUDY

Small Mammal Monitoring Unit (SMMU)

3 APPLICATION OF STUDY

• SMMU prototypes were tested in three different locations

during spring and summer:

1. One prototype placed at the ground for 3 weeks in a garden

bordering a tree-lined stream.

2. Two prototypes where tested for 4 weeks (placed on a wall

and on a tree branch) in a deciduous woodland.

3. The prototype was placed at the ground for 10 days in a

spruce-larch conifer strip within a wooded area on the
eastern shore of the lake at Davos, Switzerland.
4 ADVANTAGES

• Can easily get information like videos, sounds and pictures

of a specific species.

• Could not make the animals to be stressed when they enter

and leave the Unit.

• It can record in a wider range of monitoring.

• It gives precise mass and measurement of the foot of the

species.

• The target species do not have to be captured and exposed

to stressful situations.
4 DISADVANTAGES

• Shortage in storage.

• Power failure.

• When heavier animals attracted to the bait, it may create

points of contact for disease transmission within the SMMU.

• Big species are not able to enter the SMMU.

• It will destroy if there is an occurrence of rain.

5 CONCLUSION

The study yielded the following conclusions:

1. The small mammal monitoring unit monitors the red squirrel

specifically their size, mass and even the DNA and also their
behavior in that specific place.

2. The small mammal monitoring unit can also monitor other

small organisms like mice and birds.

3. SMMU helps the proponent to provide the information like the

video, sound, and the picture of the specific animal.
5 CONCLUSION

4. The prototype demonstrated that the collaboration between

mechatronics and biology offers novel, integrated monitoring
techniques for a range of research application.

5. Future developments will explore the possibilities for wireless

data transmission, built-in collection of weather data and
collection of images from inside the unit for the recognition of
individuals.
