Arrangement of elements in the Periodic Table

Elements in the Periodic Table are


arranged in the order of increasing proton
number.
The vertical column in the Periodic Table
is known as a group.
The horizontal row in the Periodic Table is
known as a period.
There are 18 Groups & 7 Periods
The group number of an element depends on
the number of valence electron.
For element with 1 to 2 valence electron,
Group number = no. of valence electron

For element with 3 to 8 valence electron,


Group number = no. of valence electron + 10
Atom Ca has 2 valence electrons
It is in Group 2
Atom Ar has 8 valence electrons
It is in Group 18 (10+8)
The period of an elements is equal to the
number of shells occupied with electrons

Atom Ca has 4 shells occupied with electrons


It is in Period 4
